Thats right folks - because the juche basketcase of North Korea days are numbered!
It is amazing but the North Koreans are as mad for learning English as their 'brothers' in the south. It is a huge market.
When collpase came to the Soviet Union and apartheid South Africa, it came very quickly. I think history will repeat itself as the citizens sit back and starve for another harsh winter.
One of two things are going to happen, America are going to blitz the place, grab the Kims, put them on trial and execute them as the Koreas are unified.
Or, China will roll on in and put a very moderate chairman to run the place as a capitalist dictatorship - just like China.
If either happened and you had the chance to go and live and work in North Korea, would you?
I can think of quite a few pros and cons. First of all, though they are mad for learning English, they have been brainwashed to hate our guts, especially the Americans - how would that go down? They are very racist apparently so if you are a black teacher, would you still go?
Just been reading the book This is Paradise!: My North Korean Childhood by Hyok Kang and it seems that the North Koreans are very different from the Koreans in the south as North Koreans tend to be more prone to violence, theft and of course they are smaller and brainwashed to the hilt! Could you handle that? I don't think I could to be honest, I had my share of enough tossers in the south to be dealing with the ones in the north - how many 'herros' do you think you would get everytime you left your house if you lived in North Korea?
Anyway, who would like to share their 'pros' and 'cons' list of living and working in North Korea. |

do north koreans have any exposure to the outside world? i think they'd be amazed to see a foreigner, even if they were brainwashed to hate their guts. |

I'm a slim, 6ft white British male and I get evil stares, offensive comments in Korean and Halmonies hocking loogies and spitting in front of my feet on a daily basis in Incheon. Why the hell would I want to upgrade to an even more extreme version of Korean Xenophobia?
Considering that it would take (at best) an entire generation to even begin to develop the North following any regime change, I don't think people should get too excited about any prospective ESL job market there. Not just yet at least. |

I remember seeing a documentary that starred a French guy in North Korea (he was actually allowed into the country side). It didn't seem that bad (but it was obviously stage maanged a fair bit) in that he was fairly well accepted. He did get punched in the face by one farmer that thought he was American though! |

Really?!? I am not saying that I don't believe you, but I just have not had this experience yet in my 9 months here. I am a 6ft White American, who lives in a residential area of Seoul that does not see a lot of foreigners, and I speak Korean decently, and I have never been spit at, nor do I notice evil stares. Again, I am not calling you out. I am simply saying that from my experience, nor from those of my foreign friends here, it sounds like a different country entirely to me. Most Koreans are quite nice to me in fact. |

Me too... I've never had anything but pure kindness aimed at me. There was a drunk man on a subway once who was also disabled so probably just bitter, but other than that, I get smiles all around... |

Although when she's about to climax, she may scream out "Long live Kim Jong Il..." uncontrollably! |

This documentary is played regularly on Korean cable tv (channel 22 National Geo channel). It was on last night. A complete laugh. The Norks are standing around starving (scenes of guys sneaking/stealing grass) and there's this huge banner. The Frenchie asks what it says, and his 'guide' says: "We have nothing to envy the world."
Good viewing. |
