Technically all of them are (at least the underground ones are.)

But really, would you want to be in there with 50,000 other people that live near that subway station down there as well? People forget how densely packed Seoul is. And thousands of panicked Koreans are going to be running for the subway. There will probably more trampling and suffocations deaths than civilian deaths from any bombing.

Why take your chances underground and later becoming a Morlock? I'll be staying above ground with the future Eloi.

Have you taken into consideration how cold it will be? Could you spend the night there?

I think most underground subway stations are 'evacuation shelters' as well as some tall buildings.

You will know by looking for this sign which denotes a place for evacuation:

Eh? It doesn't get that cold underground. A lot warmer than it would be on the streets anyway. Especially with 50,000 of your neighbours to keep you warm.

I've commented before that Noksapyeong's bizarreness makes a lot more sense as a bomb shelter than as what it is.

But with some parts of Seoul already sinking from too much building underground, I wonder how sturdy subway stations and basements really are.

According to this article, yes, subway stations are meant to be emergency shelters.

South Korea prepares emergency shelters
Associated Press, Updated: November 30, 2010 16:08 IST

Seoul, South Korea: Last week's deadly attack on Yeonpyeong island has escalated military and diplomatic tensions on the Korean Peninsula, and for some in the South Korean capital, Seoul, there is an increasing fear of North Korean retaliation.

Hence, evacuation centres were being prepared in the city on Monday, amidst mounting tensions.

There are 3919 emergency shelters across Seoul - many are housed in subway stations or underground carparks.

According to local officials, evacuation shelters can be easily reached by everyone within five minutes and can accommodate more than 20 million people.

Each subway station has gas masks stored in glass cabinets and are called "nation masks".

SOS emergency telephones directly connect people to the emergency control room.

The maintenance area for subway stations have been fixed with machinery to provide clean air in case of an attack.

However the government is concerened about the fact that many Seoul residents are still unaware of emergency procedures or even the existence of shelters.

I was going to comment on that. Either a bomb shelter or some masonic world headquarters

Except one well placed bomb through the skylight and it's game over for the central part of the station.

I didn't watch but I assume it has Eloi floating around in the air... And I have no idea why anyone would do that because it certainly isn't in the book... What the hell.

And what's with all this evacuation talk recently? You make it sound like we're at war or something.

Thats a JOKE. The REPORTER thinks that subway stations are bomb shelters/shelters.

ONE: The chemicals released from bombs will sink down into the subway air flow system.

TWO: With electricity cut off, the air flow system will not work and there will be no lighting, fresh air, etc.

THREE: Each subway station ONLY has approx. 10 gas masks stored in glass cabinets (How can 50,000 people share 10 gas masks)?

FOUR: SOS emergency telephones on located on the subway-platform to notify the subway staff about subway accidents etc, they won't be much use during missile attacks from the North.

FIVE: The maintenance area for subway stations are usually located almost on ground level (just below the footpaths) and the machinery to provide clean air needs electricity to run and are not bomb proof.

The REPORTER who wrote that article seems to be missing a few screws upstairs.
