Need some first hand experince from people who have been there. We are thinking of going before Chinese New Year maybe the 3rd or 4th week of Jan.

Is it safe?

How cheap is it?

What hotels or sites would you recommend?

Any other info is helpful?

Is it safe? Of course. Why wouldn't it be safe?

It's somewhat cheap, but not a bargain. Food is cheaper than in Korea, but lodging tends to run about the same, while drinking is more expensive. There are good shopping deals to be had at the night markets and the weekend jade market.

You can book hotels through Agoda.com if you want to spend a little bit more, or you can use the Lonely Planet website to book hostels (and some hotels).

The high speed train makes going north to south very, very easy.

Taiwanese English ability is very high, and they tend to be quite welcoming to foreigners.

How is the weather? My friend who lives in Taiwan said the weather is "rainy as hell" in February...

i went to taiwan for chuseok and was quite pleased with the cost of food, alcohol, and transportation. we took a train to hualien and i think it was $13 US one way. we also got a private driver to take us around taroko gorge national park, which cost about $80 US for 8 hours (a little more than the price of 2 tour tickets). i booked hotels on expedia.com for about $60 a night. i highly recommend c'est jeune hotel in hualien.
we did two nights in hualien and three nights in taipei. i loved taroko gorge national park, i also highly recommend the beitou outdoor public hot springs. taipei 101 was ok, we hit up a few night markets, and we also went to danshui and fulong beach.
