Why take your chances underground and later becoming a Morlock? I'll be staying above ground with the future Eloi.

I didn't watch but I assume it has Eloi floating around in the air... And I have no idea why anyone would do that because it certainly isn't in the book... What the hell.

And what's with all this evacuation talk recently? You make it sound like we're at war or something.

It was meant as a joke for movie buffs and an attempt to lighten the mood here.

The story goes there is an atomic explosion. Those who seeked shelter underground became cannibalistic hairy oafs (Morlock) who ate the Eloi, those who took their chances above ground.

So, let's say the Norks start bombing and everyone flees to the safety of the underground...

Firstly, the power doesn't go out down there. The backup emergency lighting would come on, and that is independently powered...

If it gets too crowded, or if you fear a gas attack, you could always open those doors that lead off the platform and onto where the trains run. I know it sounds dangerous, but assuming the power is out, you could always walk (or run) along the subway line itself (depending on where you live). Try to steal a gas mask... but chances are, you'll be attacked for a gas mask, so that may actually lesson your chance of survival.

There wouldn't be any trains running (I assume...). Umm, the good thing is, you'll know exactly where you're going and you can just head south. I would have to run along the green line all the way to sadang, and then climb out, rush past maddened crowds, and "transfer" to line 2. Then run back into the rat-maze underground and head south! I realize this plan is absolutely horrible (falling debris, collapsing roof, nerve gas seeping below, crazed people trampling you to death) but I'd take my chances underground rather than above ground, where gigantic blasts of heat and fire would kill you, the smoke would choke you, and shards of hot metal and glass would pierce you... yeah, the world above wouldn't be so great... being in a city during an artillery strike would be much worse than being out in the countryside too. Hmm. But the best bet would be to get to an area like Sanbon, Anyang, Gunpo... then you have a slight chance of living... assuming that area isn't as extensively targeted as Seoul is...

So, that's my plan of increasing survival from 5% to 10%. From there, try to hitch rides on highways... although these will most likely be targeted by artillery. You'll probably have to do an "on foot" journey for part of it.

Random Koreans may help you out, but don't expect much. I'll be looking for any rag-tag bands of ESL teachers banding together to form a convoy (being in a group increases your chance of survival)... it will totally be MAD MAX style.

If there is a war (for the record I don't think there will be) there are two scenarios.

1. The Norks go for broke and use everything they have to level Seoul including nuclear and chemical weapons. In that case Subway station are going to be of no use.

2. It stays conventional, just artillery and rocket attacks in which case camping out in the basement of your officetel or in an underground subway station is your best bet.

In the case of the latter just bring enough soju and pepero to last you a few days, oh and some water too!

Imagine how packed the underground stations would be...people would be panicking and all it takes is one person to stumble on the stairs whilst the crowd pushes in for everyone to fall ontop of each other, effectively crushing each other to death. Imagine some fat ESL teacher rolling down the stairs and squashing you like a pancake Shocked

Hehe. I would never have imagined being crushed to death by a fat ESL teacher whilst North Korea is bombing the city with artillery... but I suppose it is possible!

I guess the officetel buildings would collapse quite easily. If you were underground then you'd be trapped. There'll be no rescue efforts for quite some time in a war.

My sincere thanks for posting that clip. I'd never seen a Morlock before but knew what they were because my older brothers and sisters had seen the movie and used it to scare me with when I was a kid. It's taken a lifetime to finally see one. Thanks for the memory!

Better that than being hit by an artillery shell, huh? Wink
