Does anybody know if that information I mentioned above is correct, or does anyone know of somebody else who has done this successfully before? |
I assume you are American.
the information you have is NOT correct (hasn't been that way for some time now).
You get a 90 day visa waiver stamp on arrival.
You can leave and return every 90 days until her year is up.
On the subsequent return trips you may be asked to show proof of funds or that your G/F is supporting you or they will assume you are working illegally and may refuse your entry.
Do be aware that your G/F won't need return or onward passage with an E2
BUT
on a visa waiver stamp (and flying directly from the US) the check-in counter will probably INSIST (they are usually pretty anal about it in the states) on seeing your onward passage before they give you a boarding pass or allow you to board the aircraft (as required under current immigration laws and the bi-lateral treaty between Korea and the US).
You can get around it by having a "refundable" ticket to somewhere else and then return the ticket for the refund when you get into Korea.
You can also get around it by having a "one year open return" ticket (available from any full service ticket agent or travel agency).

Is the info you gave me for Americans only ?
Also, when you say "proof of funds" how do I go about doing this?

It would be similar for Safers in the 90-day stay and repeat.
You may need to prove that you are not working to continue your repeat visits. Having a G/F who IS on an E2 and living at her address while she supports you would usually suffice in lieu of a large bank account.

One more question though... If I have to go on a VISA run within the first month that I am there, how and where would you recommend going about it, due to the time constraints of 30 days and also the ballpark cost of the operation.
We are planning on being in Korea for March 2011, so we dont have much time left. I just want to make sure I know exactly what to do before we even leave. |

IF she is on an E2 (has it in her passport BEFORE she travels to Korea) then her process is (or should be) taken care of by the school and she has 90 days to get her medical done and obtain her ARC.
You need to go to the immigration (any) office any time within your first 30 days and get your extension out to 90 days.
A visa run to Japan (or other Asian destination) will cost you anywhere from 3500 to 5500 rand every time to need to do one.
A trip to the nearest immigration office to get the extension will take a day and cost you 60k won (370 rand).

Ok, so am I correct in saying that once there, I can apply for a 90 day extension without leaving the country? and if so, it will only be after 4 months that I need to do a VISA run?
What makes it so costly to do VISA runs, becuase 3500-5500 rand is alot of money and if I have to do that 4 times during the year (which I will have to) then that adds up to a possible R20 000. This is bad news for me
