So I've had my MacBook since summer 2006, but have always used wireless until I moved to Korea a few months ago. Yesterday my Internet stopped working because the connection couldn't be detected. I've tried restarting my laptop and unplugging the cable but nothing worked.
I've searched the forum and it seems that I will probably have to make a trip to the a# store in Coex to get it fixed. Just wondering roughly how much will I have to pay to get this fixed?

First, check to see if it's not the modem. Unplug the ethernet cable from your computer, and unplug the modem power from the wall power outlet.
Wait about 10 seconds and plug the power back in, then connect it the ethernet cable to your computer again.

If it still isn't working, try setting up a new connection in preferences. You are probably running Tiger, so hopefully the steps below still apply.

1. Open System preferences.
2. Click 'Network'
3. Pull down the drop menu for "Location"
4. Click "Edit Location"
5. Delete the location you were using (you may as well delete all of them but one)
6. At the bottom of the preference pane, Click "Assist Me", then "Assistant"
Follow the steps for a new ethernet connection.

Here's a support thread that also may help:

If your ethernet port is actually broken, it will be pricey to replace. It's part of the main logic board, which means you'll have to have the entire board replaced, which in turn, means $$$$$.

Good luck!

What others have said here is correct. If it is the ethernet port that is bad, it will be expensive to replace (in the neighborhood of 500,000 won).

First, see if you can borrow a friend's computer to verify that it is not the modem or ethernet line that is the culprit. If it works with another computer then either your settings are wrong on your MacBook's Network Preferences, or you have a dead ethernet port.

If the port is indeed dead, I see two possible solutions.

One: You could buy the MacBook Air's USB Ethernet Adapter and see if that works. I think it is only 30,000 won, so it is not an expensive "experiment". I don't see why it wouldn't work with your MacBook.

Two: You could buy a wireless base station and hook that up to your modem. You said that you had no problem using wireless, so this would give you a wireless network at home.

Hope that helps.

I tried what crescent suggested, and it seems to be working fine now.

Thanks you all for your help Smile
