Satoyama. Directed by David Attenborough. (think that's his name.) It's about the ecology of the area surrounding the largest lake in Japan.
It was fascinating. |

Werner Herzog's Lessons in Darkness about Kuwait after the first Iraq war which had some amazing footage - also love the way he uses music.
Also Herzog's Grizzly Man, and the film on the making of Fitzcoraldo. I enjoyed Little Dieter Needs to Fly the first time I saw it, but it was later pointed out to me how unconvincing everything was - has if Herzog had over-dramatised reality in order to make an interesting narrative. This is, in fact, what he's always done - he plays with the borders of fiction and fact - so although it claims to be a documentary he might have staged certain scenes for effect.
I remember being impressed by Errol Morris's The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara but haven't seen it again so I'm not sure about that one. Also vaguely remember seeing a Scorsese film about Jazz, although i might be wrong on this, at about the same time - around 2000 I guess. Whatever it was, it sucked badly. |

Nice thread - I've just rea the previous posts.
I second When we Were Kings - worth reading Mailer's The Fight too. I remember he writes about this young kid who was there, covering the fight, wired on adrenaline and alcohol - Hunter S. Thompson. That whole New Journalism / Non-fiction Novel thing with Mailer, Thompson, Wolfe, Capote et. al, is really a great period.
I loved Crumb too, and will have to see it again.
Thanks for the links on Summerhill - will check them out. |
I have already looked at some other threads but just wondering if anyone can suggest some good documentaries. I just watched The Secrets of Scientology and For the Bible Tells Me So - a great and very moving documentary about 5 devout Christian families who find out one of their children is gay. Any other suggestions?
OutFOXed - A documentary about the Fox "news" station (excellent!) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok01hJHvobM
Inside Job - This is an excellent documentary about the 2008 financial crisis. Watch Wall Street tycoons lie about their involvement straight into the camera. Right now you can see it only in North America, but when it comes out on dvd, or uploaded to the net, this is a must watch.

As for websites, ted.com has some cool lectures. |

If you liked SuperSize Me, then you should check out Fat Head, a follow up documentary to Super Size Me where the director takes aim at a lot of the claims made by Morgan Spurlock in SSM.

Thanks! I hadn't heard of Fat Head. I have no interest in eating fast food but I will definitely try to watch Fat Head if I can find it online. |

If you like docs on world politics, Australian journalist John Pilger has some good full-length films on his website. I just finished watching The War On Democracy. He interviews some ex heads of the FBI & CIA about U.S. activities in Central America and gets some interesting answers from them.
