A delightful mish-mash of right-wingery.

There is nothing "right-wingery" about being against debt. Still, you're point is valid. It's best to criticize certain policies and their outcomes without aprioristically attacking the government as a whole. It would have been better, and his point would be much better taken, if he limited his critique to easy money and government sponsorship of Sallie Mae.

He seems to think that poor people should not be able to get an education. He blames the government and her parents, but never blames the greedy jerks who are raising the costs of education in America into the stratosphere. He is clearly twisting the conversation to make her look like an idiot, rather than trying to discuss how people who are not rich get an education.

He is telling her to lie, evade taxes, etc. Sounds like an elitist jerk to me. He raises valid points so that he can keep the conversation going the way he wants.

Dude, you don't get it. They raise the costs because people pay via loans. Take away those loans, those greedy bastards aren't able to raise the costs. Who backs the loans? The government.

You can change a system. You can't change human nature.

No, I do get it. Yes, the loans contribute to the higher cost of education, I don't deny that. That is how a pos place like U of Pheonix makes money hand over fist. Private loans are a massive part of the problem. The greed is good philosophy gone crazy. Yes, shoe should have gone to a less expensive school, but as we all know, even a "cheaper" education can still be financially crippling.

You do realize that you can get loans in countries like Australia, you can get a loan for education, but the cost of education is less than a 5th what Americans pay?

Besides, what I really take issue with is the way he controls the conversation to try and make her look like and idiot (school is about drinking) and all but saying poor people should not get a college education but should just go to work. So, what, poor people shouldn't try to be doctors, diplomats, dentists, educators, professors, etc? I gave up on his tirade after 10 minutes because he was being a complete tool towards her. Why the hell was he telling her to lie, to evade taxes, etc? If he really wanted to take issue with the cost of education, he could do so much more intelligently. It's an unintelligent anti-government tirade.

....oh hell, why I am ranting on Dave's?

I think anyone who borrows for their entire education from expensive private universities ought to think long and hard about it. I think those who choose to study soft liberal arts disciplines should opt for a state school instead. People who graduate with $150,000 in debt and a history degree are either crazy or stupid. The one possible exception to this would be the super-elite, i.e. Ivies and schools like Duke, which you go to for free if your folks can't afford it anyway. Some of this is the fault of the university system, but no one who spends $200,000 on an NYU education was forced to do so, they easily could have gone to their state university for about a quarter of the cost. Still a ton of money, but not to the degree that you have no possibility of ever paying for it.

Personally, I think it's crazy to allow an 18 year old with no credit history the opportunity to take out $200,000 in loans, but hey, that's just me.

no you still don't get it. Schiff is still correct. Australia isn't some exception to the rule. I'm studying in oz right now and tuition is rising because of HECs. It's the same thing, the only difference is oz only has 20m people while the US has 300+ million. That's the only thing that has kept tuition prices lower than in NA.

Here's how it works. Because the government guarantees ANY student loan schools begin raising tuition (because students can pay for it anyway). Then other school raise tuition alongside other schools and everyone follows suit. Tuition rises. This is entirely a situation that the government has produced with disastrous consequences.

That girl IS ignorant and Schiff is at least telling her the truth about her situation. He's the only one that understands the economics behind how this happened. I'll go a bit further and say she is stupid.

Shciff: "I would leave the country. Take that money and buy a plane ticket so you are not a serf."

kelli: ...............................................................................................

her silence says "no I rather stay here and run up my 15 minutes and see if I can pay this 200k lol!"

I got into Northeastern, but quickly wrote it off as the cost to value ratio, even with the $15,000 a year they gave me as an academic grant, totally wasn't worth it, and that was with my folks being able to pay the vast majority of the difference. Unless you're doing a hard discipline it's just dumb. That said, given the American myth of perpetual improvement I can understand where people make this decision, particularly for those who are the first in their families to go to college.

Personally, I think if you can't make fairly easy sound financial decisions at the age of 18, then your parents failed you. I can without a doubt say that I would know better than to borrow such an absurd amount of money for a liberal arts degree at the age of 18. It's...common sense.

her parents and family never went to college and the idea was sold to her by her counselors at school. She may be dumb but she isn't the only one that's fallen victim to this.

She may have blindly heeded advice, but I don't think it takes a college education to know basic personal finance.

I think everyone should share the blame for having students get into tremendous debts for useless degrees.

The students for lack of common sense. The parents for letting the kids do it. The counselors for encouraging it. The banks for agreeing on it. The government for co-signing it.
