I recently responded to a post on Dave's cafe for an online (overseas)instructor. As it turns out, the guy is also looking for someone to do some editing work and also some writing/editing for children's books. He claims to have published books before and I don't really have any reason to doubt him, but he wants to start by paying me to do piece work. He says a contract is in the process of being drafted. He recently e-mailed me a document about 5 pages long and asked me to proofread and edit the text and to get back to him with a cost for my services.

The first question I have for any of you who care to respond is... Does any of this sound familiar/dodgy to anyone? I've spoken to him several times via Skype and we have been corresponding through e-mail and my gut tells me it's legitimate. If it is, what and how should I charge? Per hour? Per document? Per page? 40K Won, 30K Won? I know this whole thing sounds a bit half-baked, but I'm guessing it's the first time he has had someone out of country doing this type of work. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

If the quality of writing varies greatly, then it might be risky to do it by page. One page might take 15 minutes, the next an hour. Per word -- is there any way to count? Personally, I would go for an hourly or daily rate. Make it clear that the pace is dictated by the quality of writing, as well as other factors, such as the font size, the number of illustrations, etc. As long as you can show you're not a slacker and meet reasonable deadlines, then I don't see why it should be a problem. You can estimate hours/days on a project-by-project basis. I would think 30K would be the absolute hourly minimum.

Is this going to be taxable income?

I used to do it for 65k won an hour -- I charged an hourly rate rather than a per-page rate because some pages were quick and some pages were error-heavy. This was about ten years ago, in Seoul, legal and above-board at my place of employment (it was termed an "additional administrative duty," and I was paid a different rate than my normal administrative rate....which was different than my overtime-teaching rate...which was different than my base salary rate...yeah, lotsa math on my old paychecks at the time...).

Thanks for your input. My pay won't be taxed as far as I know. I requested 50K Won/hour. I'll see what happens.
