|
|
hi guys,
I recently started a new job (I transferred after completing my previous contract..... which was a mistake, i should have stayed at my previous job), and 6 weeks into it, its not going well. I dont really get on with the boss, the curriculum isn't good, and the kids are not really responding to me. I definately want to change job! I think if i talk to the boss and say that it doesnt seem to be working out very well, he will agree and let me give one months notice with a letter of release..... I was just wondering what I would need to do after that? Could I just find a new job and transfer my visa again? wud i have to leave the country? I have all the needed documents...... I have never left a contract early so i really have no idea...
any information would be great..
thanks! |

I wouldn't count on getting that LoR. If you cut out on them, your boss will be screwed for a while, he is not gonna do you any favors.
try to stick it out for a while
1. go drinking with your boss
2. adapt the curriculum make it fun. add some games and videos that enhance the lesson.
3. give your kids some rewards for effort like stamps, stickers, candy. make an incentive program to work hard and have a prize at the end of it. Korean kids are hell competitive. Use this to your advantage. |

A transfer at 6 weeks (or even 16 weeks) isn't going to happen (unless your school becomes insolvent).
You effectively have 2 choices:
1) stick it out to the 6 month mark
a) pray your boss will give you a LOR
b) transfer to a new job
2) order new documents now and when you are ready:
a) leave Korea (hand in your ARC to cancel your visa) or get your boss to go with you to immigration to cancel your visa
b) return and submit your new documents (via a new employer) for a new visa confirmation number
c) do a visa run and return to work at the new employer.

sounds like a lot of places ive worked at
If you can get a release letter that would be great.
I know this isnt what you want to hear but maybe youre going to have the same problems in the next place too.
Try to work through some of your problems (for example the curriculum by getting advice on how to spice it up a bit like balzor said). If nothing else, you can learn a lot for your next position.
In the mean time, get applying for your documents. If you have those in your hand, youre going to have a lot more flexibility ( following tompatz advice).
If not, youre really relying on the director being very accomodating to your needs and the liklihood is, theyre going to ask you for at least 2 million to let you go. |

Your boss is going to be pissed that you want to leave so soon; I can't imagine he'll want to cooperate. Why did you leave your previous job? |

Be prepared for the possibility that immigration won't issue you a new visa until farther into your current visa. Even if you cancel your current visa and do a visa run (or even go home) immigration may decide NOT to issue you a new visa so fast. They may make you wait it out a bit longer.
I'm not really sure how common it is for that to happen now, but it definitely still happens. In that case, you'll have to either go home, or go to another country for a few month while you wait. |

Yep. Happened to me but problem was working again in the same province. Going to another province should (hopefully) be fine. Oversupply of teachers gives them many more options so they implement minor rules/policies. |

Weird, I am in a similar position. Job isn't what I thought it would be - different hours, older kids, only 3 teachers (including me) in the whole school, and it is clearly going out of business. My contract isn't typical because it's only for 8 months but they did pay my way over here and my ARC card says I'm good till December 2011.
It actually says right in my contract that if I resign they must give me a LOR. Does anyone think that will actually happen? I am more than willing to pay back my airfare if they will just let me move on to another place. Also, if I do get the LOR do I still need a new VISA? Any advice or info much appreciated. |

IF you are under the 6 month mark there is virtually NOTHING other than your school formally going bankrupt that will get you a transfer.
A NEW visa will all the attendant paperwork is the only option.

Thanks! I'm going to try and "make it work" for now, but at least the option is there if I feel like going through the VISA process again. Hopefully they will just go out of business ... fingers crossed! |

If they do go bankrupts, it will cost you more in the way of time and money. You'll still have paperwork to do in order to get immigration to let you transfer. Your boss could delay that. In addition, you probably won't get your last month's pay. Since the school will be shut down, it will make it even harder to force your former boss to comply with any decision by the labor board. Even if they do pay you, it may not be right away. If they're going out of business, then trust me when I say that you're not high on their list of priorities.
If the company is going out of business, or if you even suspect that it is, get another set of visa documents ASAP. If they're going bankrupt, jump ship before they shaft you. |

Thanks for the advice. I certainly see your point and the school going bankrupt is far from the ideal situation. However, they are part of a larger group of schools so if one branch closed I would probably still get paid - BUT, they could try also try and move to me to another branch in some bfn city. Also very bad. Getting my documents handy in the meantime. |
