Cola is considered almost essential by Koreans when eating greasy or fried food: It does seem to help digestion.

Coke left to go flat is great for settling and replacing lost stomach sugars after vomiting or diarrhoea.

My dad drove to hospital after choking on lump of steak. The doctors had almost given up and were thinking about operating, when one gave him a glass of coke and it cleared straight away.

I have never seen a thin person drinking diet coke all day. The diet stuff is worse than the regular stuff, IMHO.

I know there are unhealthy thin people. I know I am healthy. Here are some reasons why. feel free to disagree.

1. I go jogging at least once a week, sometimes more. I run for 45 minutes to an hour at a good pace without stopping.

2. I can do 40+ pushups, probably more if I trained.

3. I work 9-14 hours a day on my feet and don't have a physical problem with it.

4. My blood pressure is about 105 over 65 and resting heartrate of 49.

5. I rarely need to visit the doctor.

6. 1 cavity in my whole life.

7. I can bench-press 100% of my body weight.

But anyways, I don't consider myself to live 'straight-edge'. Actually, an overexaggeration. I smoked pot a few times when I was 20 but didn't really enjoy it, and I look down on the whole 'look at me, I'm wearing a cannabis t-shirt' stoner culture. I don't drink much because I honestly don't enjoy it. I smoked a few times in high school but it always made me feel sick and I hate the smell.

I hope to live to 100 years old but cola could be my undoing. Then again, there is the rare chain smoker that lives a long life and never gets cancer and then the non-smoker who gets lung cancer from car exhaust and second-hand smoke. My wife's grandmother, for one.

I hope when I am over 4 and my daughter is a pre-teen or teenager that she'll go jogging or ride a bicycle with me.

Anything in excess can be bad for you coke, coffee, green tea. Caffeine requires more water to process. Most people that drink drinks with a lot of caffine rarely drink enough water.

I love the people who say I eat this much, smoke this much, drink this much, and I'm healthy. Because you're thin gives no indication you are healthy.

I love ginger ale, but since I can't find it here, I just crush some ginger and make tea with a lot of honey. I'd love to find ginger ale, though. The real stuff, though.

I am a diet Pepsi man, Seoul was an adjustment for me, as diet pepsi here is sparse at best. I switched to NEX, which tastes like crap but is fairly cheap. Can't do diet coke or coke zero, the aftertaste is terrible.

I drink several gallons in an average day, no flossing, no cavities. I'm pretty sure cavities are completely random.

CANADA DRY Ginger Ale is in every region of this country. I've seen it in Busan, Daegu, Gyeongsangnamdo, Jeju, Seoul, Jeonju, and Gwangju. Go to an E-Mart. Many of them carry it in the alcohol section as a mixer. I always have some around. Smile

Gaining or losing massive amounts of weight isn't always a sign of health or lack thereof, and should not be the main indicator used to detect such.

As well, carbohydrates cannot simply be "swapped" with another carbohydrate. Yes they are simple sugars, but there are differences. For example, some sugars cling to your teeth more aggressively than others. HFCS, or High Fructose Corn Syrup happens to be one of the most aggressive sugars. It also happens to be in almost all sweetened sodas, candies and snacks. It's like how the protein in eggs are much more soluble by the body than that from soybeans. It's still protein yet it's not exactly the same.

Health only matters to each individual person if they choose to embrace it or not so there is no point in belittling others because they drink soda or do this or that. Saying that you drink soda but you don't drink alcohol or smoke or do drugs is a silly statement. It's akin to saying you shoot old people but spare the young, handicapped and pregnant.

The best way to approach a topic like this is at its simplest concept. For soda it would be the pros and cons in its nutritional and health offerings. Unspecialized soda is simply the worst beverage that a person can drink. It has zero health benefits, nutritional value or recreational value. It actually has negative health benefits. Some might argue alcohol should take the crown but most alcohol doesn't have the high sugar content of soda, it is actually debated back and forth by scientific studies that is is good for you to drink it in moderation (yes, any alcohol, even beer), and it serves a recreational purpose (getting hammered).

Food for thought.

Hey, I don't drink the stuff myself, but can't someone drink it simply because they like the flavor, not to mention drinking it for the caffeine benefits?

Most people who think soda drinks bad are concerned with their teeth or body weight.

But the real hazard of drinking too much of them is soda drinks accelerate aging process.

Sugar destroyes collagen and elastin in your skin so fast.

And Soda simply adds more phosphorus to your body which interupts your calcium metabolism and hurts your kidney.

Western life style seems to make people age faster, I don't notice there are big differences between Asian and American teenagers and young folks, but once people get older (say roughly after 25), you see quite clearly the aging differences in general.

Does Coca-Cola in Korea use cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup as sweetener?

In the U.S. it's all HFCS but in a lot of other countries (like Mexico) I know they still use cane sugar, which tastes better and is better for your body.

Around Passover (in spring) in the US, you can find Coca Cola with yellow caps (not to be confused with special contests that often have colored caps) with some sort of symbol denoting that it's Kosher for passover:

Many Jewish people aren't allowed any corn products during the holiday. My family is of Sephardic and Ashkinazi descent, so it was funny arguing over whether or not green beans were "legal" at the seder when I was younger.

I found it funny how people would critique my soda drinking habit, but then be downing their third coffee and getting grumpy without another one.

I used to drink 3+ sodas a day, but I decided to quit after a decade plus of being addicted to the stuff. It wasn't for the typical reasons. Most people quit due to wanting weight loss, but I have always had a great metabolism, I'm actually extremely underweight. My reason to quit was the affect it was having on my mood.

High fructose corn syrup leads to sugar crash cycle. Your body gets huge rush of processed sugar which goes through the body in an hour (taking a lot of important vitamins and minerals with it). It is also a dehydrate. This leads to feelings of lethargy and depression. Also the rush of 10 teaspoons of sugar triggers fight or flight reaction, ie anxiety.

Soon I needed soda just to even stay awake. I was only drinking it to avoid the crash. Trying to quit was plagued with headaches and flu like symptoms(I have tried to quit many times but the withdrawals of headaches that last for days got to be too much).

I have also taken to drinking a lot more water, making it a personal goal for those 2 liters a day. I know silly, but I never realized that I have been basically dehyrated for years. I would keep drinking soda after soda (even getting one after another), because I could never quench my thirst.

I have noticed a lift in mood since quitting soda and things don't bother me as much anymore. Sure it didn't clear depression that I have been dealing with for pretty much my entire life, but has taken the edge off my more despairing moments. My anxiety is much less. I have once quit soda for a few weeks and noticed the same thing. Hopefully this time I can stay off the stuff, which is a bit easier here due to lack of 12 or 24 packs. Back in the States, soda was cheaper than water and there were always super sales on huge packs so I was always tempted. Sorry to write so much, but just wanted to list a good reason to quit said drinks if anyone else is a heavy soda drinker cause it's an aspect (processed sugar and mental health) that is seldom talked about.
