| What's the big deal? Sometimes I get surprised when I see a foreigner in certain areas of Seoul. I am with my Korean coworkers. They all say, "Look there is an American" when I am standing right next to them. It is not an insensitive thing, it is just pointing out something out of the ordinary. |

Yes, but do they say it loud enough for the Asian girl to hear it?
My 4 year old son did the same thing once (and ONLY once). Pointed to a foreigner and said "Waeguksaram!". It was quite funny actually. Now he just says "he looks like daddy!", including that foreigner clown on all the kids shows.  |

I assume ur from the same home country as me...(read it somewhere)
Me and my pals were more like: "Check out the dress on that BABE over there..."
We were more into using adjectives like: babe, blond, brunette etc.
Being from Toronto, there are just TOO many nationalities to NOT get used to it being a normal thing.
Your term asian girl makes me think of a girl from my high school. She was Canadian, but of Asian decent. There was NOTHING about her that would indicate she was Asian except her looks. And even then, she had some of the biggest knockers I've ever seen on an Asian girl. |

Well, Japan has more foreigners and has had them longer, they're still doing it... only smaller cities and countryside though...
But the term they use is worse, 'gaijin'. the official word is gai-koku-jin, gai=weh=outside, koku=guk=country and jin=saram/in=person. So instead of calling you 'foreigner' (litt. 'person from another country') it becomes 'outsider'.
And some stupid foreigners in Japan call themselves 'gaijin' after a while. |

You are making the mistake of assuming they will follow the same evolutionary process that many western cultures did. They won't. In 200 years they will be still pointing, staring; their politicians will still be spitting and fighting and the rest of the world will still be laughing. |
