I'm going to try an experiment this week, where I stick a loaf of bread in our baby carrier, wrap it in a blanket, put a cap on the top, and trundle it around the university and see how many times I hear, "Oh aeggi yeppuda.." Thank you. This bun has been in the oven for awhile.

Please do this, take pictures of your little bundle of carbs, and post them here with an account of how they all reacted. Very Happy

What's the big deal? Sometimes I get surprised when I see a foreigner in certain areas of Seoul. I am with my Korean coworkers. They all say, "Look there is an American" when I am standing right next to them. It is not an insensitive thing, it is just pointing out something out of the ordinary.

It happens to me everyday and I'm never ceased to be amazed at how ignorant it makes the people look. It's almost like at home when we see a wild animal on the road side and we tap someone and say : Look! A Moose! Or Look! It's a Bald Eagle!.....the fact that there are tens of thousands of foreigners in Seoul doesn't seem to keep people from being amazed at the site of one of us though...

I've done this a few times, try it out. Stare back at them, tap your friend on the shoulder and point in mock amazement as you say "ooohh...hanguk saram!" and maybe add a "JaeMeeSaeyo" or two.

It works better when you see "wow, ilbon salaram ee da!"

Yes, but do they say it loud enough for the Asian girl to hear it?

My 4 year old son did the same thing once (and ONLY once). Pointed to a foreigner and said "Waeguksaram!". It was quite funny actually. Now he just says "he looks like daddy!", including that foreigner clown on all the kids shows. Embarassed

I assume ur from the same home country as me...(read it somewhere)

Me and my pals were more like: "Check out the dress on that BABE over there..."

We were more into using adjectives like: babe, blond, brunette etc.

Being from Toronto, there are just TOO many nationalities to NOT get used to it being a normal thing.

Your term asian girl makes me think of a girl from my high school. She was Canadian, but of Asian decent. There was NOTHING about her that would indicate she was Asian except her looks. And even then, she had some of the biggest knockers I've ever seen on an Asian girl.

Actually, Koreans do this "running commentary" a lot when they're with friends. I don't think there's a lot of thought behind it.

Well, Japan has more foreigners and has had them longer, they're still doing it... only smaller cities and countryside though...

But the term they use is worse, 'gaijin'. the official word is gai-koku-jin, gai=weh=outside, koku=guk=country and jin=saram/in=person. So instead of calling you 'foreigner' (litt. 'person from another country') it becomes 'outsider'.
And some stupid foreigners in Japan call themselves 'gaijin' after a while.

You are making the mistake of assuming they will follow the same evolutionary process that many western cultures did. They won't. In 200 years they will be still pointing, staring; their politicians will still be spitting and fighting and the rest of the world will still be laughing.
