Hi, I will be in Korea from next year and I am very keen to take learning the Korean language seriously and hopefully become fluent one day. The only problem is I have hardly even began learning it so I can at least prepare myself for when I arrive. This is due in part to the fact that I am finding it so difficult to find user friendly books to learn from. I was learning Japanese previously and I have to admit I found so many books and classes in London. But it feels as though there is not such a wide selection of books or resources for Korean, despite the huge Korean community we have here. Can anyone help with reccomending good user friendly books for a complete beginner. I prefer books because I can take these anywhere and learn at anytime. Thanks. Sorry for the rushed message I am at work on reception and I dont want my boss to see this. |

Korean Made Easy by Seung-eun Oh is a popular one. I see foreigners reading that pink book everywhere. It's very straightforward and gives you grammar points gradually instead of bombarding you with grammar right away.
I have also used Sogang Korean. The great this about this one is that there is very little English used in the book at all so you rely on context clues to understand what's going on. I used this book with a Korean tutor so it maybe hard to use on your own. |

download from the internet. You can get a few different beginners audiobooks on there. Just type in 'korean'.
I did the pimsleurs before i came out here and it was quite easy and helpful. |

If you are in London and you are serious about leaning Korean then go to either SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) or the Korean Cultural Centre. SOAS is expensive (about 300 for a term) but it the biggest langauge institution in Europe and these two places are the only places that offer reasonable and affordable Korean language programmes.
Other than that buy the Sogang Korean books.
PM me for more info or help.
By the way, how do you define 'huge'? I was just interested.
All the best. |
