|
|
I know a lot of hagwons are specific about gender, particularly kindergartens wanting a female. These are the same institutions that want young, attractive caucasians. However, I thought public schools were supposedly indifferent. So I've heard that they are the ones that don't discriminate based on race. However, I'm seeing lots of public school postings (direct apply/through recruiter as opposed to EPIK/GEPIK/SMOE) that want females. What gives? |

Employer's market. Many parents and administrator's prefer a female's voice over a man's. They might believe that women are easier to deal with or to tell what to do. Recent sensationalized sex scandals (how's that for alliteration!) have given all foreign male teachers a bad rap. The list goes on.
However, I know for a fact that GEPIK hires about 60% men and 40% women. (Although the gap is closing).
If you are qualified or have experience, I would apply to those job openings anyway if you are looking for work. |

I always thought that it was because the majority of principals are ajosshis, aka sexual deviants, that will try to take advantage of the situation in order to attempt to score some non-Korean poon. Oh, and the common belief here that women are more docile and submissive and therefore more manipulable. |

Which sex do you think is more likely on average to quit/pull a runner before completing the twelve months contract? |

Well I think most long timers in Korea know/knew at least one weird foreign gentleman in their area. It could be part of the reason but I'm not sure. |

The women teachers I know are better. I know I will garner a lot of grief for that statement, but there you go.
I haven't had any bosses that prefer females because they are seen as submissive - christ! do guys know north American women? (who make up a huge part of the females here). They are the most assertive friggin women on the planet and hagwon and principals know this.
I honestly don't think you North Americans realise how intimidating you are to Hakwon owners. Male or female - you are both quite fearsome. |

When I was dating my wife, the men at work were very happy for me. I don't think the average Korean male is anywhere near as insecure about this topic as some foreigners seem to think. At least so long as said Korean male is married (which most male public school teachers seem to be). |

Fear of pedos? I walk down the street near my school and get running hugs from at least 1 third grader on an almost daily basis. If I were male, I probably wouldn't hug.
It's a shame that that mentality exists. |

Had a gyopo friend that one particular middle school girl would hug on the street if she saw him. She'd literally chase him down from across the street just to hug the guy, then run off with her friends. Very funny thing to see. We don't see her much anymore, probably because she's kept all night in high school. |

Your friend is ethnically Korean, so it probably didn't scare the parents. I'm assuming, of course. |
