I always thought ginger ale wasn't sold here (at least outside the foreign markets). But, today I found it at E-Mart. I was searching for soda water (club soda) to make my own ginger ale (just ginger syrup and club soda, not really the same taste). I finally found small cans of it in the liquor section, on the bottom shelf, in small, inconspicuous, shrink-wrapped 6-packs. Canada Dry brand. Right next to it were 6-packs of gingerale in similar packaging. The name was written in Hangul (진저엘). It's the same as back home. Awesome.

I've been buying that CANADA DRY gingerale with hangeul writing since at least 2004.

I remember the shock one waygook colleague had when I said I've been buying sour cream since 2002. He doesn't believe me, I think, because he never saw it anywhere. The fact is, ginger ale like sour cream is around, just not everywhere. I didn't see ginger ale in E-mart however until this year.

Hell I remeber it from back in 200 maybe 2001. It is just not very popular with the Koreans. I think they keep it around so they can make some cocktails.

Yea, definitely being sold as a mixer, not a stand-alone drink. This is why I never saw it (despite having looked on numerous occasions in the past). I was always checking the soft drinks aisle.

I just wish I could find Ginger Beer, much prefer it to ginger ale, which is only really good as a mixer imho, not so much as a standalone drink. I bought that Canada Dry from E-Mart, it's just about the worst ginger ale I've ever tasted, the ginger taste is so weak it's basically soda water.

A drunk stumbles out of the Lethbridge Hotel and falls flat on his beak. He looks up and sees a sign: "Drink Canada Dry".

"It'll never be done," he says.

x2
I was so happy when I found it, but the disappointment upon tasting was huge. Canada Dry really is crap.
Praying for some Scweppes or Bundaberg brand.
Those guys know how to make a great ginger ale. (Sighs wistfully).

Canada dry is crap. I've been grinding fresh ginger and making tea. I keep some cold in the fridge, which is decent. I may try adding some soda water.

You'll find the Bundaberg brand is Ginger Beer not Ginger Ale. I drank this all the time in Australia ( Bundaberg is also, incidentally, my place of birth - but bias aside it's Australia's finest ). I was so happy when I went for a short trip to Singapore and found it was sold in convenience stores there.

I don't know if Ginger Beer is really common at all in North America though.

I'm from New England, and Ginger Beer is not very popular, though it does exist. Speaking of soda in New England, I'd love to find some Moxie, but I'm not holding by breath.
