That's the speculation of a Japanese newspaper.

NK could target mainland next, Japan daily says
By Kim Young-jin
Future attacks by North Korea could target mainland South Korea, not a border island, a Japanese newspaper reported as the South remains on its highest alert after Pyongyangs deadly shelling of Yeonpyeong Island.
Citing a source familiar with North Korea, the Tokyo Shimbun reported that a high-ranking military official in the North Korean army said late last month there would be an attack on Gyeonggi Province within the year.
The report came amid concerns of another attack after the South and the United States held four days of joint naval drills.
Seoul officials say the North will likely carry out more belligerent acts in a bid to further ratchet up regional tension. In anticipation, the military has beefed up its capabilities on the five West Sea islands near the maritime border.
Inter-Korean tensions have soared in the wake of the bold daylight shelling, which came eight months after the North sank the Souths warship Cheonan near the disputed border.
The North Korean official also said there would be another attack on South Korean warships in the West Sea, the report said.
President Lee Myung-bak has pledged to make the North pay a dear price if it strikes again.
Meanwhile, Radio Free Asia reported that the North appears to be readying its military at a West Sea base.
Citing a well-informed source, RFA reported that additional commanders have been dispatched to the base in South Hwanghae Province to check on the preparedness of soldiers there, who are operating under a special state of readiness.
On Tuesday, outgoing Defense Minister Kim Tae-young told lawmakers of the substantial possibility of additional provocative acts after the joint drills, adding the military was fully prepared to launch counterattacks.
Seoul is considering holding a live-fire exercise next week and consulting with Washington about holding additional drills in western waters.
Analysts say the North could act up again in a bid to consolidate power for North Korean leader Kim Jong-ils youngest son and heir, Kim Jong-un.
Such moves could include more shelling, an assault landing on Yeonpyeong, the dispatch of forces to South Korean waters or flying a fighter plane across the Northern Limit Line.
The shelling coincided with Pyongyangs revelation of a uranium enrichment program. It said Tuesday it is operating thousands of centrifuges after recently unveiling the enrichment plant to a visiting American scientist.
The international community has largely condemned the North for the Yeonpyeong incident, with the notable exception of China, which has called for the resumption of multilateral denuclearization talks. Beijing, analysts say, avoids condemning its communist ally for fear of causing instability on its borders.
Watchers say the Norths periodic raising of tensions in the West Sea coincide with its calls for a peace treaty to end the 1950-53 Korean War to put a legal end to its confrontation with the United States.

| Kyonggi province has been a target for 60 years. Just another statement of the obvious. |

I lived in Japan for over 10 years and not long after I first arrived there people told me that the North Koreans would be trying to invade and/or attack Japan the following year.
I was told that the NK attack was really, really, really definitely coming next year every goddamn year for the next decade. My wife (from Seoul) was frequently told that whereas south Koreans were lucky that they could flee to China if North Korea got aggressive, Japan, being an island had no escape and was therefore vulnerable like nowhere else to the NK threat. There were even tv documentaries that told how the Norks planned to land their troops on Hokkaido and rape and pillage southwards to take over the whole country. Yes, really.
I think the second post on the thread has the correct response to this. |

There have been off and off attacks in certain hot spots for decades. But if the North starts targeting different areas, especially densely populated areas, then this is much more serious than past flare ups. How serious? We'll have to wait and see, but it's always better to be aware of what's happening around you than just so dismissive of every news report. The succession of a new dictator in a bordering country that is still technically at war with the country where you live doesn't happen every day, you know. |

| Well, the Korean military is worried about the possibility of Nork Special Forces infiltrating the country in the near future so they are in talks with the US of having joint Special Operations exercise. The thing is I don't know how much of this is fear-mongering propaganda and how much of it is letigimate concern. I'm hoping its just talk but as a "soldier" I'm becoming increasingly worried about the possibility of armed conflict. Nobody fears war more than a soldier. |

OMG you're absolutely right. We also shouldn't forget about the Mongols from conquering the world or the Germans who might try to extinguish the Jews again. |

Japanese are island dwellers.
there dream is to be on the main land.
they are on a fault line.
their island will flood one day.
you will be surprised what people will do to survive.
one day the world will go into a free for all again.
Japans first target will be Korea again.
but hey.. we should be more worried about CHina swallowing Korea up.
I mean they probably look at the map and think..emmmmm that little corner we call Korea is kind of like on our main land.. we had better take that...hahahahahaa |

Relax, I was shooting at the message, not the messenger.
I don't know about anyone else, but I was never suggesting dismissing every news report, just the ridiculous ones that come from sources that I know have a long history of talking complete garbage on the subject. |

It wasn't anything directed at you so much as those who've adopted the Korean public's "Meh" attitude about any possible trouble with North Korea. |

The Korean public's attitude backed up by the international relations community. |
