Let's say your name is John Doe, and you teach university students here. What do you ask them to call you?

- Professor Doe
- Professor John
- Doe Teacher
- John Teacher
- Mr. Doe
- John
- something else?

I introduce myself to them by my first name, but they end up calling me a variety of different things. Most commonly my first name, teacher or professor. Honestly, it doesn't matter, just go with the flow unless you are overweight, anal and unhappy like my coworker and can force them to call you Mrs. Doe and will end up getting low evaluations because you walk around with an indignant on your face.

Mine mostly call me by my first name, and I prefer that.

Why do you let them all you "teacher" when you know it's wrong? Isn't your job to teach them correct English? If one of them studies abroad and calls their professor by their first name or 'teacher' it might cause some problems. But they'll never know since you never told them.

When I took Korean language courses at my uni here in Korea this year I called my teacher 선생님. It was a regular credit course for other students in the class so he was a proper lecturer/professor.

Besides most of us here are more aptly referred to as lecturers rather than professors becayse we do not do any research and have not done a PhD. So teacher is fine. Nobody refers to people as "John lecturer" anyway. They say "tutor" or "teacher.

I always called my Professors back home by first names because they preferred it.

Nothing wrong with using a first name. When I went to university (one of the biggest in the U.S.), I'd say over 50% of my professors had us just use their first name. It's always up to the teacher. Sometimes they will insist on being called "Dr. X"

Being called professor vs teacher doesn't seem like an issue, either. But I suppose that's just an opinion. Smile

The very first class is always introductions. Although they know I have a PhD, they are told to call me by just my first name and it works just fine.

I get called by various permutations of my name (it is long and complicated with a double-barrelled given name and an unusual family name), or 'teacher' or 'professor' or 'processor'.
I like processor best.
