Been looking up info about different VISAs on the HiKorea portal (http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/InfoDetailR_en.pt) and was still needing some info. I was looking to come to Korea in January to teach at a winter camp before beginning a public school position at then end of February. I was told I will need a C-4 VISA for the camp position which is valid for 90 days. I have a few questions that someone with winter camp experience might be able to help me answer:
Is the C-4 VISA valid only for the days that the camp is in session?
Can I arrive two weeks before the camp begins and still enter with my C-4?
Will transferring from the camp to the public school job require me to leave the country?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Lettering mine for convenience.

a) it is good for 90 days from your date of entry HOWEVER by law you are required to leave or report your change of employment status within 14 days of the END OF EMPLOYMENT. They will allow you to stay for up to 30 days AFTER your last day of work (assuming you have that long remaining on your visa) IF you make the report.

b) Yes. See (a).

c) Probably. It is most likely that the change of visa status (C to E) will require a visa run but it is up to the particular officer dealing with your application. IF you require a visa run to change your status, your school will pay for most of it (you pay for meals and hotel).

I have a similar question. I'm working at a camp on a C-4 visa in January, and I have a contract at a school (school is not associated w/ camp at all) starting on March 1st. I've talked to my recruiter for the Mar 1st school and he said I'd need to return to the US between contracts to change my visa. Asking if instead I could go somewhere close-by (Japan, Thailand etc) he quoted this from the HiKorea site:

Quote:

The following outlines the differences when applying for visa issuance through overseas consulate.
* By rule, must apply from the Korean consulate that is located in the applicants country.
※ When applying from a third country is permitted:
- Those that have worked in Korea as a Professor (E-1), Foreign language instructor (E-2), or Researcher (E-3), and have no record of law breaking
-Those whose education level has been verified by domestic verification agency (Korean Council for University Education) that was created based on Law on Korean University Education Association
▶By rule, must go through an interview at the consulate. (However, those that applied for visa issuance from a third country may skip this portion as situation warrants)
- According to the standard interview manual, conduct a face-to-face interview. However, if circumstances were such that making a visit is not possible or plausible, then it may be conducted over video conference.
- If, after the interview, the applicant is deemed unfit to work as an instructor, visa will not be issued regardless of the issuance of visa issuance certificate.

I have worked in Korea before on an E-2 visa, so it looks like I satisfy this requirement. My question is - how do they verify that you've worked on an E-2 visa before? My passport recently expired and my new one doesn't have any E-2 visas, will they accept the old one as evidence? Is it worth the risk? Anyone do a similar visa run lately? I remember doing the trip to and from Fukuoka a few years ago, things seemed so much simpler back then ...

I found this info on the HiKorea website:
http://www.g4f.go.kr/pt/CvlapplInfoDetailR_en.pt?cvlapplCd=12700000001&locale=en&cvlapplGbSeq=

Quote:
Change of status for short-term visitors is for Visa Waiver(B-1), Tourist in Transit(B-2), Temporary Journalism(C-1), Short Term Business(C-2), Short Term Visit(C-3), or Short Term Employment(C-4) status holding foreigners seeking status change to participate in activities associated with another status. An appointment at the immigration office or branch office can be reserved for the process of this application.

If I am reading this correctly, it seems you can go to immigration and change a C-4 VISA. I'm not sure about the procedure. This would really simplify things. Anyone out there done this?

There's always Guam...

I too am doing a January camp then starting on an E-2 in mid February at an unaffiliated school. My recruiter (for the E-2 job) told me that I would need to do a visa run (which, frankly, I have no problem with. Gonna use that camp money for a nice vacation!). She also told me that I need to provide an address in Korea for them to send me stuff relating to the E-2 job. I'm using a friend's, so again no problem.
