One day I DID have to leave in a hurry because my ex-girlfriend was threatening me with a knife when she was drunk and it was no joke. So I grabbed my toiletries case (contact lenses et al) and my brief case, which had my degree and transcripts and whatever.
I also grabbed my $500 U.S. full leather boots and out the door I flew! Oh yeah, and my cell-phone. |

The US Embassy says you should take
| Quote: |
Essential Emergency Supplies
A minimum three day supply of lightweight, high energy, packaged ready-to-eat foods.
Toiletries (toilet paper, soap, tissues, etc.)
A 30-day supply of any critical medication.
For a baby, a minimum three day supply of food, formula, diapers, etc.
Desirable Emergency Supplies
Backpack
Blankets or sleeping bags
Extra clothing, including one warm item whatever the weather
First aid kit
Flashlight and extra batteries
Small battery-powered transistor radio and extra batteries (This could be essential to your safety during standfast conditions, if electric power is interrupted.)
Money. For emergency use, a modest supply of both U.S. and local currency is recommended to defray costs of travel and subsistence on the economy, if required.
Essential Documents
Passports
I-151 or I-551 Alien Registration cards ("Green cards")
Korean residency documents
Birth certificates
Marriage certificates
Certificates of Naturalization
Consular Report of Birth Abroad
Desirable Documents
Whether or not you will ever be subject to evacuation because of war, weather or medical emergency, it is a good idea to always keep together in a briefcase or small carry-on bag, in one place that can be reached in an emergency (not, for example, in an office safe), all the following which apply to your family:
Adoption certificates
Family health and immunization records
Extra photographs
Social Security Numbers, including children's
U.S. drivers licenses
Children's school records (and your own)
Prescriptions
Credit cards
Local and U.S. currency
Travelers checks
Checkbooks
Bankbooks
Personal address book
Safe deposit box keys
List of all assets, debts and contents of safe deposit boxes
Wills
Insurance policies
Employment resumes
Health and immunization records of pets
Complete inventory of household goods
Powers of Attorney allowing spouses or others to attend to family and financial matters if one or both adults are not present, to include access to safe deposit boxes; buy or sell vehicle or property; enroll children and stepchildren in school, authorize medical care for the other spouse's family members, etc.) |

It seems you'd be quite weighted down!
The Mormons, of course, teach you should always have a 72-hour bag packed and ready and a year's worth of food saved:
