What does that mean? Were they on your good side when they paid it? If so, then it worked out. You don't have to be on a mechanic's "good side" when they fix your car. The hagwon doesn't want to pay airfare and you don't want to pay bills. You need to compromise somewhere in between. Either they paid the bills and you pay the airfare or they pay the airfare and you deduct what YOU used in bills.
It's common sense not to expect the employer to pay for the employee's bills.

But you are going to Thailand. You should be presenting yourself as a teacher trying to save the school money. The way you are coming off is just as bad as the hagwon for not wanting to pay any of the airfare.
Let's use 500,000 as a figure for a flight to Thailand.
The total you are owed is 1,000,000 then. They should also pay your last month's salary and severance. Have they agreed to this?
I don't see how you are quibbling over 3,000,000 more which doesn't include any of your salary or severance.
If they aren't going to pay for the airfare and give back security deposit, what guarantee do you have they will pay the last month's salary and severance? That's like 2,000,000 each, doubled for a couple. In total, 8,000,000.

| Quite frankly, I'm getting angry enough to email the incoming teachers and tell them not to waste their time with this school! As I mentioned, I was asked to recommend the school to new teachers, and did so honestly. I think it's time to retract that recommendation. |
I wouldn't do this. You are going against the grain and will make it harder on yourself to get any money. Try to be as nice as you can be. Your approach to this is all wrong and I feel you are tainting the image of a good English teacher.
You need to be nice, polite, put up with the crap to get as much money as you can. Then when you leave let people know about the school. You aren't helping things by inflating your problems. |

Thanks for the detailed reply. The maintenance fee issue is a problem for me because I believe that the school paid half to get on our good side. Now, I feel that the school is being cheap, realizing that they owe us a lot of money at the end, and trying to take it back. Now that our usefulness has run its course, and they don't need to keep us happy any longer, they're trying to take it back.
On the issue of where I'm getting the figure of 4,000,000 KRW: the tickets are 1.5 KRW each, one way. We live in Eastern Canada, and it just costs that much to get there. Add the 600,000 deposit, and one unredeemed vacation day (per teacher), and the total in question is about 3,860,000.
They agreed to give us all of this in a three-hour marathon negotiation session last week. Now they have returned to their original terms and acted as though the negotiation didn't happen.
Quite frankly, I'm getting angry enough to email the incoming teachers and tell them not to waste their time with this school! As I mentioned, I was asked to recommend the school to new teachers, and did so honestly. I think it's time to retract that recommendation.
BTW, illysook's suggestion of going on vacation while fighting the flight money issue, the 30 days, etc. wouldn't work for me. There is nothing in my contract that says they have to fly me home "within 30 days". It just says I get a return ticket upon completion of the contract. |
What does your contract say in regard to paying the bills? |

Well, the contract doesn't say anything about the bills, only that they will be paid by the teachers. However, we felt that we were getting a break, and I'm 100% sure that was the intention at the time
The contract does, however, say that the only deductions that can be made from the deposit are outstanding bills. There are no outstanding bills - we were given a subsidy, and paid the bills with it. There are no unpaid bills. |
