My contract is with a university and goes from Feb 28 2011 to Feb 28 2012. My ARC expires Feb 22. According to the rules, I can't renew until 60 days prior to my ARC expiry date. So I went today with my DOS and another teacher. I had the following:
Damaged aposillised FBI check, because the grommet that held it together fell off in the mail, so it was in 2 pieces.
An apostillised copy of my BA degree from Feb of this year.
All the docs from my school.
I renewed WITHOUT having to show them the FBI check and apostillised copy of my degree. I only paid 30,000 won AND renewed before the 60 days window. The other guy didn't have either the FBI check nor the apostillised degree.
I went first, then he renewed. After he renewed, my DOS told the person at kimmi that I had an FBI check, but it was no good. They asked to see it, look at the raised seal and accepted it. they also accepted my apostilliised copy of my degree. They said that since I handed those in, I would no longer need to get the FBI check (that being said, I'm getting another one in July of next year, just in case!)
So, in addition to not needing the docs, and renewing WAY before my ARC expired, the guy asked if I wanted a copy of my apsotillised degree, I said yes, so he proceded to take it apart. Three different pieces: notarised copy, authentified copy, and apostillisation
SO. . . we were told to ignore the letter that they sent out.
And that we had another year (didn't have to sign anything or show proof that we were getting the docs)
Nothing was put in our passports
No re-entry fee
In addtion, we went at 3.30pm, there was only one person ahead of us, no lines, fantastic! Go in the afternoon.
this being said, I don't know if they've changed the rules or we just had luck on our side, Like I said, we went with the DOS from our school, we dressed nicely (unlike the guy next to us who had a baseball cap on sideways, baggy jeans, and a lip ring), and work for a well-respected uni.
Anyways, just wanted to share. I'm happy! Don't have to go back for another year for myself, just for my husband in Feb.

That makes sense to not add anything in your passport, but I think your ARC still needs to be updated. Make sure they do this when they can.
It's not clear by your post if they actually did this.
I had something similar happen, and they only put a change of location stamp in the passport. |

I'm still awaiting an official statement... or until Jan.
The FBI check does not go into effect until after Dec. 31, so you would not have had to show it. |

Who does the statement have to come from to be official?
I like your second option better.
But I think your point about the FBI check is a good example of the kinds of problems they are facing with this changeover.
From what naturegirl said, it seems like someone could renew now for a visa that will start next year. So would immigration require that the renewal process follow current guidelines or future ones? Is it when you're doing it, or when you're doing it for? |

About the FBI check, the thing was, yes, it doesn't go into effect until next year, HOWEVER, I was renewing for a contract that went into effect next year, which is why I thought I might need the FBI check and what I was told when I called them. |

i really hope i dont need to get another FBI check done. I had one done and my parents were going to have it apostilled for me. My father opened it up when it came in the mail and then the apostille people said it had to be in the original unopened envelope. Such a pain in the butt. |

What?! That's nuts. My mom just sent it to Washington DC and she had opened the envelope. It's not true that it has to be unopened. BOTH federal (WDC) and state secretary of state accept OPENED documents.
DId it get sent back to you? Or did they just tell you that on the phone? Try sending it again: NOWHERE does it say that it has to be unopened!!
I'm sorry, but they're full of it. (edit: the Sec of State, not your parents. I'm not saying your parents are lying, but that they've been given the wrong information) http://www.state.gov/m/a/auth/
NO WHERE does it say it has to be in the orginal envelope. Like I said, my mom opened and sent it to WDC: Send it again. Has to go to WDC; not the local Sec of State. Here's info from their website. Show me where it say original unopened. It doesn't. they're wrong. Re send it.
Mail Service
The Authentication of documents takes approximately 15 business days to process from the time of receipt**. Please include a cover-letter (see example) with your name, telephone number, address and email address. Please indicate the name of the country where the document will be used. We suggest using a self-addressed stamped envelope for faster return of your documents. Documents received without a return envelope and postage will be returned through the State Department regular mail, which can result in a 2-3 week delay. You can use Fed/Ex, UPS, and express mail services for faster receipt/return of your documents. However, you must enclose a prepaid airbill and envelope.

A. I'm not saying they're lying. I'm saying the people who did the apostillisation dno't know what they're talking about. Doesn't have to be in an unsealed envelope. The raised FBI seal is all that's needed to prove it's real.
B. You shoudl be sending this to WDC
C. If you want to get it done in RI, you'd have to take it to a notary first, then maybe get it authentificated at the county, THEN at the Sec of State.
I've been getting docs apostillised for 9 years, from 4 differnt countries on 3 different countinents (USA, Romania, Spain, Peru). I know what I'm talking about. Send it to WDC and save yourself a headache. I'm trying to help you out.

Sorry again, I re worded my post. My parents had to send stuff around too, I HATE it when they are given the wrong info. She's sent stuff to IL Sec of State and they've sent it back claiming it needs to be sent to the county first.
So she does, then to the Sec of State.
Then a month later, needed to get mre of my stuff done and decided to try again sending it direclty to the Sec of State. this time they don't ask her to send it to the county, but just apostilise it straightaway, See what I mean? The govt has NO idea what' it's doing
So half of my stuff has the county seal in addition to the Sec of State and the notary and half don't have the county seal. |
