I picked up a Korean xbox from a friend who left the country and was pretty excited to get a current gen console for very little and ordered a bunch of games for it. After a month or two i got graphical issues and when I looked into the issue I realised that the xbox i was using was one of the earlier models and that they were notorious for breaking down.

I'm going to send the xbox up to the Mcrosoft service centre in Seoul ( I live in Busan) but hold little hope for it.

I'm wondering if it's possible to get only the console itself at yongsan market when i head up to seoul or possibly online? Would I be saving much money that way? I've got two controllers and all the cables etc.

Yes you can buy only the console if you want.

Isn't xBox region specific in its games?

That was a big reason that I went with PS3, lack of that.

MS might replace the main-board or give you a replacement if it's under warranty.

However, don't get the box repaired by a shop. It will break down again, guaranteed. I repeat, don't get it fixed by a third party repair shop...you won't get more than 5 months of life out of it.
