				| I just went to Homeplus. I found they have the best new shopping bags. They're using bags that can be used as (legal) garbage bags. They have the city logo on them and are labeled for use as garbage bags. They didn't charge me for it, either. Pretty nifty. |

Actually, Homeplus doesn't do shopping bags any more; you need to buy a large non-disposable bag.

People who fail to do so are given garbage bags, and are charged for it. |

				| People have been using garbage bags for shopping bags as long as I've been here. However, it wouldn't be the default option, you would have to ask for them, which was reasonable since they are more expensive than regular bags. |

Really? I never once seen a Korean put their shopping in a garbage bag in my 10 years here.

Anyway, great idea Homeplus. |

My Korean friends taught me to use garbage bags pretty much the first time I went to Homeplus (2-3 years ago). Maybe it has just reached Seoul/WhereEverYouGuysLive :p. Our LotteSuper would often ask if I want garbage bag or grocery bag while our HomePlus has stacks of individual 10 and 20 litre trash bags just by the counter. They don't hand them out regularly at my Emart, although they still sometimes ask me if I want one if they run out of other bags, and always provide one if I ask for them. When I come to think of it, my GF's mum also use them are grocery bags when she goes to the local supermarket, and she lives in Seoul.

I've been doing that for years as well. All the mid to large supermarkets around here have that option but yeh, you gotta ask. "Seregi bongtu."

Sometimes the regular cheaper plastic bags are useful too though, for putting out recyclables. |

				| So you don't have to use those city logo garbage bags for trash? I might have to try it out here in Yangsan, cause the Homeplus bags are just the right size for my trash use. My Homeplus charges me just 50 won per bag, which is really nothing anyways. |

				| the emart and homeplus i've gone to in dobong both gave me a dobong-gu garbage bag, but it cost like 350 won. i guess i'd still rather pay that than bring my own bags, but, i live in a different gu (i go to those stores by bus), so it seems a bit silly. |

Actually, they do provide shopping bags. These shopping bags can be used as garbage bags. They're different from the garbage bags you buy at the corner store. It has handles instead of the flaps you tie together (at least where I live normal bags are just tied by flaps). But, it still has the city logo on it. On the bag it has diagrams and says in English, "Grocery bag today...Garbage bag tomorrow." These are under respective pictures of each use. |
