that's what I was imagining, 2 or 3 year old parts. Not used, but maybe never thrown away. Wouldn't they be dirt cheap?

I mean if my clunker from 2003 can run xp with skype, itunes, msword and the like, steadily, albeit a bit slowly, wouldnt a machine built from 2008 parts be able to operate for all of what I need it for?

Maybe the pride I can take in this is building a working computer for the lowest price possible.

or maybe I convince my boss that we need a new work computer and she pays me to build something for school.

that would be nice to have a computer not bogged down with all the crap the work computer is...

Yes, all the programs that you listed are pretty much resource sippers. You didn't sound like you needed much, and it's true that even 4 year old parts would suffice. That's why I recommended such a low build.

These guys were trying to give you something a bit more future proof, but honestly, if you don't see yourself running anything else in the near/far future, I wouldn't recommend anything more than $500. Just my 2 cents.

I'm just gonna guess, but I think you can get away with a build spending this much:

cpu: 70k
mobo: 50k
ram: 2gb 50k
gpu: 50k
hdd: 1tb 100k
dvd drive: 20k
case: 20k
psu: 50k

total: 410k

I'm basing these prices on 3 year old components. Although a bit craptacular, I think it'll get you where you need with no problems.

Well, it's possible if you search a lot and haggle a lot. But typically, Korean vendors don't just reduce the price of older parts (NOS, new old stock) down to dirt cheap. They will take them off the shelves or keep the price at a certain level.....probably never less than about 50% of the original price.

In that case, building a computer only seems cheaper when one is trying to get a relatively high-spec machine.

I saw someone selling a one year old desktop with peripherals AND a 22-inch monitor for 300k on craiglist. And I swear I've seen cheaper too. I mean anything that is one-year old can't be that bad can it?

As much as I want to build, I'm gonna be pretty cheap about this.

Maybe I buy someone's old computer and replace a few key components for cheaper than building a whole machine myself.

Thanks for the input guys.

Lol that's what I've been "trying" to do for the past couple of months. But your advantage is knowledge. Atleast you know how to build one. I'm still trying to figure out what that tiny blue thing on that square thingy does.

I want another computer built for next year. But I'm still deciding on what I should use it for. Apparently, that's the first thing that I'd have to think about when getting a computer. The first two was just for kicks. Now they're kicking my butt.

Early this fall i built my own computer.

I got a cheapo case
- i3 530 cpu
- 4 gb ram
- 1tb hdd
- dvd drive
- foxxcom motherboard. I don't remember which model number.
- 500w power unit.
it cost me 520,000 for everything. Not the best price. I could have gotten it cheaper if i had ordered from danawa. Also i am not in Seoul to get the good deals from yongsan. This is build is overkill for my needs but it should be capable enough to last a long time.

This is what I think Murmanjake should do....something like this......well worth 520,000 for something new which can be upgraded as opposed to scraping together a chugger for 300,000.

Is 200,000 won really a lot of money?

I just saw this a moment ago, murman, you might be interested - perfect for your needs. Sell off the monitor to make it an even better deal!

Thanks for the tip, that looks perfect.

I'm gonna contact the seller about shipping, as I'm in suwon.

Would that be too risky to send by post u think?

If I ever wanted to upgrade would I pretty much have to start again with a new motherboard?

I actually couldn't find the seller's contact info on that page.

Nuggets, could you post a link to the original ad?

Sorry if I've derailed this a little from building to buying...

You wouldn't have access to Intel's 2010 line up (i3,i5,i7) as C2D chips are only supported on socket 775 mobo's. But, then again it really depends on what you want to run as far as programs. If you stay with your current list of programs, this computer will run them phenomenally until the wheels fall off before you have to upgrade it. Depending on the mobo, there's a possibility you could upgrade to a quad core, or even just overclock the current cpu.

But, if you had to upgrade, depending on your needs, I would probably recommend adding another hdd to supplement all your illegal downloads! Razz

Dunno if he'd be willing to mail it out, there is always risk involved dealing with people you don't know.

Here ya go bud:

I was inspired by the talk in another thread about, as long as you don't care about future-proofing, you can still get good framerates out of the old LGA-775..........or older AMD stuff for that matter.

So I thought I'd do a bit of Danawa-ing to see what could be built for the gamer who wants FPS satisfaction right now for the right price.

E7500.....110,000 for virtually 3.0ghz out of the box is pretty good. Of course it will go much higher. 3.6ghz on air fairly easily.....(I actually have one of these laying around if anyone wants it for...mmm...80,000?)

Gigabyte GA-EP43T-UD3L.......has all the important features for 118,000...but most crucially it does DDR3 RAM which is actually much cheaper now than DDR2.....I know. Weird but true.

Samsung DDR3 1.3ghz 4GB......55,000!! That's great value! And will match the FSB on the mobo nicely. We don't need any fancy RAM for this build...I wouldn't bother OCing RAM. Not much benefit.

That's about 280,000 so far......

The GPU choice is going to be important here......and I believe it should get the lion's share of the budget if you really just want a good gaming rig.

Two cards look suitable to keep this gaming rig under a reasonable budget......any Nvidia GTX460 or any ATI HD6850......both will be around 250,000 but they are very new so they have all the DX11 goodies which will keep you happy for at least 18 months.

So, approx 530,000 so far...

The PSU.....there are many 500 watters these days for 50-70,000 made by decent companies like Acbel and FSP which would do nicely.

A 1.0TB Seagate HDD for 60,000......Samsung and WD drives have let me down recently.....so I'm back with Seagate these days.

With case and peripherals it's going to be about 700,000.....but it is a genuine gaming rig which will play all current games at highest or near highest settings.

Anyone see how to strim this build back a bit?

What do you guys think of the Asus Sabertooth series mobos? Especially the p67 that will be released. I dunno why, but I feel like I gotta get me one, and all for the wrong reasons! (Well, some right)

I made the mistake of purchasing a cheapo used computer off Gmarket. They shipped it assembled.

Worked fine for an hour, then as I was updating, Windows pretty much terminally crashed. They gave me an install CD and the case had an OEM license number, but as I was installing, I realized the computer refused to recognize the hard drive.

Friend suggests maybe the hard drive borked... so, I think, no big deal, I wanted a bigger HD anyway. So I get it, install it, and computer recognizes it. I install XP off the CD... no problem.

Then the computer reboots... and nothing.

HD still recognized but computer refuses to boot. I can't even boot off the CD anymore. Sometimes, the screen remains blank, sometimes it shows the boot screen, but it's hung up. No matter how long I let it wait.

Might try to mess with it some more after finals, but am pretty convinced that I'll just have to salvage my HD and the monitor that came with the computer and get a new one.

Could be a multitude of problems. I see them stemming from the motherboard, ram, or psu. hard to say anymore, need more info.
