Apostillisation = a letter confirming that a photocopy is a true copy of the original document.
Notarisation = A statement signed by the holder of the document, swearing that it is genuine.
Is that right?
If these definitions are correct it seems silly to do either for the criminal record check since you are not submitting a copy (no need for apostillisation) and it is stamped by the government that issued it (in my case) the UK, so therefore there seems no need of notarisation.
So am I right in saying that the degree cert needs both but the crc needs neither or perhaps just the notarisation? |

Yes, that's right.
You get a notary (if you're in Scotland you can just use a solicitor) to photocopy your degree and say it's genuinely a copy and the document appears to real. If your CRC has a signature and a stamp from somebody relevent on it, then they have already notarised it and it can be sent away to be apostilled as it is.
It took me about 3 months to figure this process out... |

Even though it seems redundant with the CRC you still need to do it. There is no explaining bureaucracy |

I've just gone through the whole process in the UK.
Degree cert: Get copy notarised and then apostilled at the FCO.
CRC: make sure this is the basic disclosure, not the check from your county constabulary. get notarised either by a solicitor (cheap) or public notary (more expensive). Then get apostilled at the FCO.
For visa application you will also need:
a) Copy of Passport Photo Page
b) 4 passport photo
c) 2 degree Sealed Transcripts
d) Two Letters of References: teaching job reference letters must include the work duration as mm/yy ~ mm/yy as full time
e) TEFL/TESOL/CELTA Certificate: only copy and bring the original with you when you come to Korea
f) E2 Health check
g) Contract/Agreement (3 copies, signed)
You may also need: a personal essay: copy of education certificate if you have: personal consulate interview (all depending on your situation).
Once you have submitted a visa application, wait 10 days for your visa issuance number.
take number to Korean embassy, along with passport photo. Fill in more forms, pay 30. Wait 1 week. And there you go.
So as you see, it is a long and traumatic process. Hopefully this is of help. |

It is pretty drawn out. Very important too...a guy at the Ulsan immigration office apparently said "Is this real" and cut off the apostille that cost me $60 and threw it in the bin (according to my principal).
If this is true, it's a rather unfortunate situation when immigration doesn't recognise the very thing they ask for when you're applying. |

Maybe he was used to seeing the American apostille, which is stapled. British apostille is glued on.
He did grant you the visa I take it? |
