I'm talking about PC games only, not Xbox or playstation.

I want recomendations. I've never got into it. I remember playing a game on a friends pc once called "Alien Versus Predator" and it was brilliant. I want to get that and play it. I'm into any games where I'm walking around with a gun shooting. I've also enjoyed Doom and Unreal Tournament. The more high tech and or realistic the movement and shooting action the better.

Also, are these games hard to install and run if you get them from P2P?

MVP Baseball 2004

Both games give a solid baseball experience, but the real advantage to PC play comes from the ability for gamers to "mod" the games. The things that these "amateur" modders do with these games are incredible... spectacular graphics updates, roster updates, and tune files to provide very realistic baseball...

You lazy gob, all you have to do is peruse the game websites! But it's a slow afternoon at work, so here are my picks:

[The games you mentioned are FPS (first person shooters) so I'm going to address those. I'm a solo pc FPS gamer, I don't go in much for the online multiplayer, the flight/driving sims, or the sports games. I've never really played any console video games (well, not since Atari at any rate). Any games I mention here you can check out the rating at www.metacritic.com. I won't buy a game that gets under an 80% rating there- I have better things to do with my money.]

Any of the following will give you hours of time wasted as well as a sore butt and red eyes:

*****Half-Life. Going to assume you've played it already, since you're sitting in front of a monitor. If not, you're a loser: kill yourself now.

***** Deus-Ex- The thinking man's (or paranoid man's) roleplay/FPS game. I just finished Deus-Ex 2: Invisible War (***) and while the graphics were great, if I had to choose I'd go with the original. Even though it's from 2000 the graphics still hold up pretty good, and the gameplay can't be beat. You'll swear that the plot was written by Anda.

****Medal of Honour: Allied Assault. Great but of course it's come out on console as well, had a good and then a mediocre add-on, had to compete with Battlefield1942 and then Call of Duty. A new Medal of Honor game set in the pacific theater is coming out soon.

****NOLF (No One Lives Forever) and NOLF2*****: Think female James Bond meets Austin Powers, 1960s, lots of gadgets, great atmosphere, very funny. Shoot lots of bad guys and laugh your ass off while doing it.

***1/2 Rainbow Six: Raven shield. Control a squad of anti-terrorist commandos- very realistic (one shot, you go down), very technical. Fun, but only great if you're somewhat anal and want to reply missions until you pull them off perfectly. I enjoyed Ghost Recon more.

****Ghost Recon: like Rainbow Six but you control an army squad- more outdoor scenarios. Older game engine but I enjoyed it more.

*****Unreal Tournament: No thinking, just shooting, running, shooting, and more shooting. They've just released UT2004, but ANY UT (original, 2003,2004) will satisfy. Great as both solo and multiplayer. Plot? We don't need no stinking plot!

*****Splinter Cell: you've heard of it. Third Person Shooter rather than FPS (just like Tomb Raider). More sneaking than shooting, but what a great game. The Sequel, Pandora Tommorrow, is now out.

Call of Duty: Have only played the demo, but wow- it blows Medal of Honor right out of the water. Will be buying it within the next few weeks.

Far Cry [new]: While everyone is waiting for HL2 and Doom3, this comes out of nowhere and blows all the critics away. Jungle combat where you can actually hide in the grass, and sniping from 1500m away. Hard to go wrong with a Ubi-soft game these days.

***Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy: They're okay. Force powers and saber duels are fun. But honestly, I'd download these or borrow them off someone rather than buy them. They're good fillers if you need something to play inbetween great games.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Game of the Year 2003. Like Splinter Cell it's not a FPS, but everybody loves it anyway. I've been scouring the EBs in town for a used copy of this and so far have not been able to find it. Those used copy shelves are also a great way to rate new games- if you see 3 or more copies of any given game, forget about it.

***Return to Wolfenstein 3D: like Deus Ex it's a little old now, but still great fun if you haven't played it. Nothing satisfies like killin' NAZIS. Worth downloading or buying on sale.

***Max Payne: first one was great, but didn't try the second one.

**1/2 Star Trek: Elite Force: same as Max Payne.

Im playing Battlefield Vietnam at the moment.... and loving it. But to experience it you really need to get online and play a mulitplayer game.
Counter Strike is also a classic, and the single player version condition zero has been released.
Both of these are first player shooters.

I just bought Call of Duty ... great game but my version is completely in Korean, including the onscreen menus and checklists.

Just finished Splinter Cell. Will be looking for the new one ASAP.

Another goodie is Commandos 3. If you're not familiar with the Commandos line of games, check it out. Really fun.

Battlefield 1942 was really good. So to was the MOH series. Want to play Battlefield Vietnam. Be good to take a shot at charlie.

The civilisation series of games was and is still excellent. I reckon the second one was the best. But the third one is still really good.

GTA 3 on the PC was really good.

The Sim City series of games was good. (Does anyone remember the old Siv Earth?)

Empire Earth was good but a little dry.

Starcraft is good. Ask a Korean.

MOHAA / Battlefield 1942

The Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam series, whilst good, are a little too arcadey.

If you want a very realistic Vietnam game experience then buy Vietcong - a fantastic game.

I'm a bit of an FPS nut too, but I prefer the multiplayer titles.

That said, the top of the single player FPS heap is still MOHAA and the NOLF series IMHO.

They're both packed full of levels, and of reasonable difficulty. I also recommend the Thief series for a new slant on a tried and tested genre.

Bulsajo's post is a great starting point.

Some of the games that have been mentioned need some SERIOUS hardware, such as Far Cry, and Unreal Tournament 2004. These are bleeding edge games that have only come out very recently and are going to tax your system if you intend to play them with all the bells and whistles on. :)

Max Payne 1 + 2 are EXCELLENT single player shooters, even though they're from the 3rd person perspective (think GTA). The story driven game is phenomenal, but there is no multiplayer mode offered at all. Highly recommended, and pretty looking too.. :)

In terms of replayability:
1. Half-Life: There are so many mods made for this game, you can go on forever
2. Battlefield 1942: Desert Combat. Nuff said
3. UT2k4: the new standard in FPS games. Unfortunately, because of their engine licensing deals, I don't believe you can make mods for the Unreal Engine.
4. Warcraft 3: lots of minigames players made for it, worth playing, but gets old fast.
5. America's Army. It's a free download. Steep learning curve, but once you get it, the action in this game is intense. I had to give it up because it's so engrossing.

FPS games are okay, but I find I get bored of blasting everything in sight after a while. Half-Life is an exception. I hear there's Half-life 2 ... is it already out?

RTS games, IMHO, are more fun. If you're in to WWII RTS games, the Close Combat series is par excellence.

I really enjoyed Medal of Honor:Allied Assault.

Found it at Yongsan for 30,000. Good value considering all the hours of fun.

If you're going to download games on p2p be ultra-careful about viruses. Scan the file individually before you open it.
