I'm considering both POLY and EPIK. It seems to me, from what I've read, that POLY is a better choice, in that the pay is better, the program is a little more rigorous (not a joke), and I'll be able to choose my working location. Ultimately, it's my decision, but if anyone who's experienced working in either program can give me some advice, I'd greatly appreciate it. |

Poly is a hagwon, EPIK places you in public schools. |

Thank you for the reply. Yeah, I realize that Poly is a hagwon. I was hoping people with experience working there would give info about their experience. I hear, as hagwons go, it's pretty good.
Thanks again. |

I've never worked at Poly, but my best friend did. Standard hours at every location are 9am-730pm (yuck) and you will have to do a ton of grading at home (double-yuck). |

Do you want more money or more free time?
If you like teaching young kids Poly is one of the better schools out there.
I just started working for a Poly school, coming from a CDI April where i taught Kindergarten as well and my impressions are pretty good if you don't mind working long days.
Unlike my last school which may have been the shadiest Hagwon anyone I know had ever worked for, these guys were very honest and fair with me. I wasn't even working considerably more hours but there was a nice big raise in it for me. The students are pretty good kids who've mostly been abroad which gives them a high speaking level.
Public schools I've never taught there. It seems they get a lot of time off and benefits and the pay is lower than at a Poly school which pay about as well as any Hagwon. |

I've taught at Poly for a little while and they seem to be a pretty good operation.
I've never had any issues with them not following the contract, and don't know anyone who has had issues.
The kids all have a very high level of English and you are teaching actual material from US based text books. The pay is also really good.
That being said, you do work a ton of hours and I often have to take grading home, though I've heard it varies from campus to campus.
For me, the money is worth the extra hours, and you do get used to the long hours. You just have to figure out which is more important to you. |

Thanks for all the help; it's much appreciated. Just wondering, have any of you worked at the Poly location in Bundang? |

POLY is awesome. I've been at a franchise for three years...three best years of my life.
I have a friend at Bundang. He says it's very professionally run. |

Last year I thought about changing jobs and tested the market and got quite a few offers with one of them being POLY. Even though POLY was one of the better offers I got it didn't come close to my public school job with GEPIK. An average of 32 classes a week for 2.5 mill with two weeks of paid vacation.
My school is with GEPIK but it was great, which made it hard to leave so I stuck around for a 4th year. I made more than 2.5 mill just teaching 22 hours a week and had anywhere between 10-12 hours of overtime at either 25k/hr or 40k/hr depending on which class I was teaching. And, a guaranteed 25 days of paid vacation, which usually resulted in a lot more.
There are some good public schools out there. |

I worked at POLY from 2009-2010. I had a great time working at the school. A few weeks after I began we got a new director and he changed things around. He runs it very well, always paid us on time, like to take us out for dinner, etc. I can't speak for each POLY but I have a feeling that most are well run. My girlfriend worked at another POLY in Seoul and also had a good experience.
The kids are extremely intelligent and fun to work with. If you like working with Pre-K or Kinder students POLY is a very good school for it. Like another poster said, all the books come from America which is a good tool to use. Since the kids are so smart you really have to be on your game, especially when teaching the 4-5th graders! I didn't have a hard time getting things graded during work on on break time. I think the only time I took work home was my first or second month when I had to grade monthly test writing samples. At my school each NAT had 1 class off during the kindergarten schedule for prep time. In addition, we all had prep time for 50 min. after kinder was over and before elementary classes started. I feel that we had more than enough time to get any grading and lesson planning done in the alloted time each day. There were some times when it seemed that everything (book reports, monthly test writing, report cards, monthly comment, etc.) were all due in the same week and that was hectic, but that doesn't happen THAT often.
I admit the working hours are a bit long, you never REALLY get used to it! But, the days seemed to go by fast. And the fact that I had great co-workers helped too on the days when you feel a little down or anything. I felt that the pay was good. Maybe we could have gotten a tad more for the long hours we worked, but I feel lucky to have gotten what I got considering most schools pay their teachers a lot less. I know at my girlfriend's school they got 200,000 more per month since they taught 1 more kindergarten class that we did not. However, I was able to teach intensives for the last 6 months of my contract so I eventually made as much as she did.
If you have any more questions about POLY feel free to PM me. I can't do it yet because I don't have enough posts. |

http://www.koreapolyschool.com/
Most of the site is in Korean. However, if you know how to read it then you can search for different POLY campuses and each campus has their own website with teacher bio's and such.
On the campus page, select a region of korea and a list will appear under the map with all the POLY's in that area. Then, click the gray tab that says "바로가기" to get to that campuses website. |

Poly is a bit ridiculous. They pay marginally more than your average kindergarten hagwon while expecting you to work long hours and teach more during those hours. I don't think it's hard to find another kindy hagwon that isn't going to expect you to kill yourself. |

Poly isn't just a kindy hagwon. Half the day is with kindergarten and the other half is elementary. They do spend a great deal on the kindergarten curriculum and it's quite fantastic. But, I still felt the pay was fair. Heck you could make anywhere from 2.7-3.2 depending on qualifications when you sign the contract. |

Kindy hagwon generally implies kindy-elementary, as schools that are strictly kindy are fairly rare. As for the pay, some locations pay that much, but plenty of others pay 2.4-2.5. If they're willing to pay 2.7+ it starts to be worth it, but any less than that I really don't think it is unless money is your first prerogative. |
