Former Cleveland Indian Ryan Garko signs to play in Korea
http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2010/12/former_cleveland_indians_ryan.html
CLEVELAND, Ohio The big leagues are in Ryan Garko's rear view mirror. For the time being, at least.
Garko, the Indians' third-round pick in 2003, has signed a one-year deal to play for the Samsung Lions in Korea. Garko will be paid $300,000.
The Indians traded Garko to San Francisco midway through 2009. He played 40 games for the Giants, hitting .235 (27-for-115) with two homers and 12 RBI. Non-tendered in the off-season, Garko signed with Seattle, but was released during spring training.
Garko, a first baseman, outfielder and designated hitter, signed with Texas. He appeared in only 15 games with the Rangers, batting .091 (3-for-33). He hit .247 (90-for-364) with 18 doubles, 15 homes and 59 RBI at Class AAA Oklahoma City.
Talk about tough luck. If Garko could have stuck with the Giants or Texas, he would have played in the World Series this year.
Garko's best year was 2008 when he hit .273 (135-for-594) with 21 doubles, 14 homers and a career high 90 RBI for the Indians.

Yes, when this topic came up on a Korean site, there were more mentions of Choo Shin Soo than of Garko himself. |

In somewhat related news the Red Sox just dropped huge coin on multi-year contracts for Crawford and Gonzales.
Boston sports journos are licking their chops (they'll make out either way). |

He's probably the best Korean player (non-pitcher) in the world right now, but he's not even top 10 in America. Top 20? Maybe, if he's lucky.

He's the best Korean player period, certainly the best player on the Indians and I'd say one of the best players in the majors.
Last season he posted a staggering 7.3 WaR.
One players in the Major Leagues had a higher WaR- Evan Longoria. He beat out such players as Miguel Cabrera, Josh Hamilton, and Albert frickin Pujols.
Average, OBP, SB, A canon of an arm, and solid range and good fielding.
There's more to a player than just OPS. |

Agreed, extremely underrated. Few players can profile extremely well anywhere from first to fifth in the lineup while playing stellar defense. |

Barring injury I see him having another good year next year. .310-.330, 25 HR, 100 RBI and 20 SB with a .400 OBP.
One year or two he'll have a Monster season of .330-.340, 30+HRs, 120 RBIs, and 25 SB and an OPS North of 1.000 barring injury/contract-based slackerdom
One of the guys out there that defines "Five Tool" player. Actually six tools because of his eye. |

Why do you see him (Shin Soo Choo) hitting between .310-.330, 25 HR, with 100 RBIs? Over the course of a full season, he's never hit over .300, or posted power/production numbers like you're listing. You say 'another' as if he's accomplished those things already. |

He's entering the prime of his career and has another year of seeing pitching. He has hit .300 the last two seasons. Last season he missed a couple weeks with an injury so that slightly derailed him, not to mention he was being pitched around the second half of the season.
He projects to be that kind of player and post those kind of stats, of course barring injury. It's baseball so obviously he's going to have one season where he hits .280 with 15 HR and 80 RBI.
And btw "another" referred to 'good year' and not the stats. The stats are where I project him given another year of seeing MLB pitching and no injury. Hopefully Sizemore will be healthy and that will help production. He'll also be helped by facing the righty-heavy Tigers and Royals for much of the season.
If you go by WaR (#2 MLB!) he had a monster season last year, so saying he'll a have another very good year would almost be a regress. |

Well then by that rationality I see Morneau's line as following:
.365 AVG, 46 HR, 132 RBI, .487 OBP, 1.455 OPS

We're talking an increase in BA from .300 to .315 in HR from 22-25, RBIs from 90-100 and OBP holding steady and games played from 144-160.
That's very reasonable, unlike your Morneau claim.
Seriously, are you trying to say that the statistical projection I gave is unreasonable? Most Fantasy gurus and scouts would project the same production.
Again, all depends on staying injury free.
I don't see him staying #2 in the majors in WaR, but a top 10 finish in WaR seems likely.
28 year old hitter, Eligible for arbitration in 2011, 3 years of seeing major league pitching, Two staffs in division that will have 4 or 5 righties in them. A healthy Sizemore. Not an outlandish projection.
6 more hits in the same number of at-bats and he breaks the .310 mark. I mean, not unreasonable at all.
However for Morneau to post power numbers like that, while no one would be that shocked, would certainly constitute a MONSTER year. |

And he'll have a healthy Carlos Santana likely hitting behind him for an entire season, whereas previously he's often been forced to bat cleanup for lack of alternatives. This will be the first full season where he's got reasonable protection around him in the order. |
