Does anyone happen to have a kombucha culture or know where you can get one in Seoul? Thanks! |

No, you can't find kombucha. I never found it in Korea, and I was surprised since it originally comes from East Asia. I think one is more likely to find it in Japan, but I am not sure. If you want something that's fermented and not spicy like kimchee, you could buy kefir from the Russian area. That's very good for your health. |

A teacher near me used to brew her own kombucha from a culture she had sent to her in Korea. She's no longer in Korea, but I'll see if I can't track down where she got it from and how easy/hard it was for her to obtain.
I'm also interested in home brewing. I've been back in the states for a few weeks and pretty much replaced coffee with Kombucha again. It might be placebo, but kombucha really seems to jumpstart my energy levels, and I'm not looking forward to going without it again when I return to Korea. |

Thanks for the help. I guess I'll have someone bring it for me from the states. I've been making ginger beer: http://www.chow.com/recipes/10683
Not exactly like kombucha but it does have probiotics in it and you don't need to buy a culture to make it. |

If anyone manages to get some culture - for brewing it - I would love to buy one or two from you...
I have also searched Korea to no avail - I used to brew it and drink it years ago in my homecountry -
Its surprising Koreans don't drink it - as it was apparently named after a Korean (In 414 A.D. Dr. Kombu from Korea brought kombucha to Japan to treat the Japanese emperor Inkyo. From Japan, this incredible tonic spread to Russia, Europe, and India)
the only thing I could find on it was
Kombucha - 캄부쟈

Ok guys, listen, me and some friends have been brewing for a while now in Seoul. I've got cultures, but my friends has LOTS of them.
I'm gonna ask for her contact info and pass it on.
As far as ordering online, never EVER get a dehydrated culture. They are way too fragile for those first two weeks and extremely susceptible to mold and bacteria.
Here is my friend's contact info for Mothers/SCOBYs

Sigh. No. It's not. If Kombucha is a placebo then so is live-culture yogurt. The big deal about either is the live bacteria content (probiotics), and the vinegar of kombucha changes the pH of your colon, making it harder for harmful bacteria to thrive. No, there isn't enough hard science on Kombucha itself, but probiotics has gained lots of ground in the past 20 years or so. |

I have some Kefir grains I'd be willing to trade for a kombucha starter. |

Just to add to this topic, here is a really interesting article from Nature about work being done in "human microbe ecology". This is going to be a really important field. We're just starting to study how microbes interact with our body even though a lot of our body mass is made of beneficial microbes. Our indescriminate use of antibiotics has been like using Fuel Air bombs on a city when you need to arrest one person.

[email protected] is no longer living in Korea and cannot supply kombucha scobys.
Check out facebook.com/hihajagaja (formerly Fermentation Celebration community page) and post on there to connect with other fermenters in Korea! |

I haven't personally ordered but I've seen kombucha mothers on gmarket and naver shopping. Just search for 콤부차 or 홍차버섯 (red tea mushroom).
You only have to order once. Please post your experience here if you try it. |
