I got this USB only a month or two ago. I've come to notice the amount of space/memory used does not seem to change. I counted my folders and was using about 500 MG of the 2 Gigs. So I deleted those folders just to see what happened... nothing. Then I put them back on, and 1000 MG was being used. And so on.
So I drag the folders and files and whatnot from the USB box into the trash. They are absolutely not on the USB, but the memory remains nearly full.
Has anyone run into this problem, or should I just go ahead and account this to my good old computer curse? Anyone know how to fix it?
I guess I should add that I'm using a Macbook. Only had it a few months... maybe it's related to that, as I'm not quite used to the software or differences from a PC. |

Try emptying your trash. When you "delete" the files on the USB, you don't really delete them, but mark them for deletion. So, your usb still has them on it, they just don't show up in the Finder any more. By deleting the trash on your Macbook (with the USB plugged in, of course), it should signal to the USB drives to clear out those pseudo-deleted files for real.
Just a thought. |

I don't think that's the problem. My trash has definitely been emptied, though I'm not sure I emptied it with my USB plugged in.
I'll try it when I get back home. Thanks. |

I assume you mean a USB memory stick?
Have you tried re-formatting it? (not sure how that works on a mac). |

In OS X, if you put a file from an external drive into the trash, then eject the drive, the trash will appear empty. It is most likely that you haven't emptied the trash while your drive was plugged in. If you really don't think that is the problem, then there is something you can do using the "Terminal" application.
To open Terminal, click Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
The first thing you can do is type a command to make all hidden files visible. Type the following exactly (or copy and past) but don't include the quotation marks:
"defaults write com.Apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES; killall Finder"
This will instruct OS X to show all hidden files in addition to regular files. You will probably now see a folder inside your flash drive called .Trashes and this will likely be the cause of your missing disk space.
In order to hide the hidden files again, simply type:
"defaults write com.Apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO; killall Finder" |

This is a great answer!
Plus, don't forget to delete .Trashes ;) |
