ireland are only banning public smoking, to fall into line with E.C guidelines. Ireland is one of the most pro E.U countries in Europe, they're almost on a par with Italy.
i don't blame them. after having to put up with the English for so long, they jumped at the chance to join the big Europe gang.

Yes they should be able to smoke but in designated spaces within the bar. Like back in PEI Canada we have smoking rooms in the bar, smokers can still smoke and take there drink with them. I have worked in a bar as a bouncer for three years and i have never enjoyed it as much until they banned smoking. Emptying out tar filled ashtrays is just disgusting. Also, you get complaints about the smoking room being too disgusting! well now you know how non smokers feel about it!!! when we have to sit there and inhale all the smoke. I get a kick out of when people go outside to smoke because the room is too "smoky" cracks me up I tell ya..

In Ireland nowadays many of the younger people don't smoke. Going into a bar and being surrounded by the smell is pretty disgusting and theres nothing more disgusting than the smell of your clothes after a night out. My family are bar owners in Ireland and are more than happy to have had the ban brought in. Its not going to damage the industry, people go out to drink not to smoke, as for the publicans it will also save them money on A/C and decorating, as regards damage done by the smoke inside. So all in all I think it'll be a pretty good thing. You say people should be able to decide themselves whether or not they can smoke in a public establishment, what about the people that don't smoke, shouldn't they have the right to go into a bar and be comfortable and enjoy there night rather than choking on the smoke and stinking off it the next morning???

Thats true its insane the price of ciggaretes in Ireland but maybe its a good thing, discouraging the younger generation from smoking. As regards outdoor bars, maybe that would be the way to go but I dunno, can't see many of our punters being into that kinda thing. In my eyes its a good idea, but then again I'm a non smoker, as for my dad I can imagine he's well p***** about it!

I quit smoking yesterday after 16 years... its a filthy habit, smokers should be isolated in cubicles miles away from me.

i quit although, i seem to be smoking when i drink again, so who really knows what that means...

that the governments should just make smoking illegal. obviously, it's an evil substance that kills thousands of people every year. i can only speak for canada here, but do you know why they don't make it illegal? because they make so much bloody money off the taxes that it doesn't make sense to make it illegal. or maybe if they made smoking totally illegal we would find out that cars are more responsible for the air pollution than most people would like to admit.

You would think that bar owners would take into account there staff's personal health. As we all know, legal actions have been won against people got cancer after working in bars.. I've never smoked a day in my life ( got the crap scared out of me in gr 6 when i was shown a smokers lung) but after working in bars i've had enough second-hand smoke to do me for a while!. Most people don't realize how disgusting it is till they quit, too bad we couldn't educate those who still smoke. Congrats to everyone has quit, its not any easy by any means!
