I'm applying to GEPIK in the spring and was wondering what your take is on getting a 100 hr. online TESOL certificate before actually being hired. Does it increase my chances of being hired or should I just wait until I've already been hired at the base pay level? |

It's not necessary but it looks good. The main reason to do it is for public school jobs; it'll bump you up 100-200k extra per month. And you need to have it done before the start of your contract. They won't start paying you a higher salary right after you get it; you have to wait for your next contract. |

Get it ahead of time.
It will help when you land cold and get shoved in front of a class (it is nice to have a clue what you are doing).
It will get you a 100k pay boost (otherwise you may not get it until you renew with some programs).
It won't hurt your application and may give you an edge in some cases.

Yes, I agree with those above. A TESOL of any kind, even if it's just a terrible online one, should bump your pay at least 100k/month. Now, I don't recommend online TESOLs if you actually want to get something worthwhile and experience that you can use later in class. I have many friends who have said how worthless these are...but they feel content bc it bumped their pay....to each their own....
Also, you don't have to get the TESOL completed before you apply, just note on your application that you are in progress/plan to complete whatever program you choose, and that alone will bump your chances. |

Thanks for the opinions.
Frankly, I'm doing it for the extra cash. I'm volunteer teaching an ESL "extra" class next Spring for some experience, so that's not really an issue for me. My main concern is paying $200 for the certificate and then not landing a job, but the pay bump seems well worth the risk. |

There are plenty of jobs in the ELT industry, especially in South East Asia. Don't worry about that. |

Yes, this is why any online TESOL is totally worth it money wise --you make back the money you paid for it within the first couple of months, then continue to have your higher salary. Go for it! |
