The problem is most book about teaching would be boring and in a sense common no publisher would look at hit and go ya that sounds like a great book idea.. Your best bet is to look for some self published ones as I think some one recommended one above.
The other best resource is just find some good blogs and here at Dave's.
Also would recommend - Korea Bug books. Not about teaching per say but does give an expats glimpse of life and culture here in Korea. All Hail King Baeksu! |

The truth is anything can be published if the writing is good enough - who would have thought a vet in Yorkshire or a speccy little English Wizard in a prep school would sell as they did - it seems no-one has had the writing talent to bring a book about teaching in Korea to life. There is plenty of scope to write a decent novel in my opinion. |

Yes true to a certain degree - good writing can sell most anything. But the travel / life abroad books that sell have to have a certain hook - sex, uniqueness, excitement, danger, spirituality or a life change.
But a book about a twenty-something Amercian who goes to Korea and teaches in a hagwon with young children.... Who goes out on the weekend and drinks. Maybe has some sex with a couple of the locals nothing getting major kinky more that sleeping with a different girl each week. Yes maybe he sees a couple of Buddist temples and his trials of dealing with Horking older Koreans and scooters on the road. This book would be mostly dull. Now maybe if it was based 30 years ago during the dictatorship years or rather is in North Korea than South. Teacher ended up running away from the police and the Korean mob yes that would sell a book. Or the person ended up rescuing an orphan, and so one.
Still overall the life of a hogwon teacher would not really be a best seller and most publishing house I feel would skip on it.
Another one to check out is "Prisoner of Wonderland"

I agree with you that writing a straight autobiographical account of a year or two (and more) in Korea would be as boring as shit. I think though a decent, gifted comedy writer could make a cracking book/script out of teaching in Korea - there is so much you can put to make a decent comedy novel but writing comedy-lit is something you can or you cannot do - most writers cannot and thats why the book on Korea has yet to be published. |
