I know this thread hasn't been updated fo a while, but just wanted to add a word of advice for anyone looking into a kindle for Korea....

Yes, the Kindle 2 and the international are "optimized and updated."

But for ANY of the new versions... you have to send the Kindle BACK TO AMAZON to get the battery changed if it dies. It's supposed to have quite a long life... but if you're planning on staying an ex-pat for a while, I'd recommend buying a refurbished Kindle 1 (the original model.) It has slightly less storage space, but you can change the battery out yourself, which I think is a definite plus when you're dealing with international shipping prices and turn-around times. AND its significantly cheaper!

I'm using the Kindle 1 now, and I love it... and having to hook it up to the USB cable to dl books is super easy, and not really a hassle at all.

Yes, it can do pdfs. You just email the pdf to your kindle e-mail address, and it will show up automatically after a couple of minutes.

However, the problem with viewing pdfs on a kindle is that it the text is super tiny, so you need to re-orient the kindle to landscape mode to have any hope of reading the text, and it's still quite small even then. If you are into pdfs, I'd probbly get the kindle DX.

The 3g you can get anwhere in the world as he said. The wifi lets you download a book or have a book sent to you only around a wifi connection like at a coffee shop or near a wireless router. Unless you are going to some remote place with no wifi around and only download books from amazon you can get the 3g. If you want to save money you can download the books from torrent sites and put on your kindle with the charging cable.
