I don't live in Seoul but in my little town outside of Daegu we have had an explosion of electronic cig shops. I know of at least 5 that have opened in the past 3 months.

Look for 전자담배

This is the best I can do.

Where in Seoul do you live? Technomart and Yongsan both have places that sell them-around 125 for the better ones, and a bit cheaper for the ones that look like "real" cigarettes. i was at Gondeok station the other day and they have a special store that just sells electronic cigarettes. knowing where in Seoul would be helpful, but there are those three places to start with.

I've been seeing a lot of my students smoking these (I teach at a college), and I'm curious. What exactly are electronic cigarettes?

I just purchased a Janty eGo-T personal vaporizer (PV) at Yongsan 139,000w. The liquid costs about 37,000 per 20ml (~18-20 packs of cigarettes). So while the initial layout is high, with time I believe it will work out to be about the same cost as smoking regular (analog) cigarettes. So in Korea not really any cheaper. But ultimately safer!

But my biggest concern is that governments are trying hard to ban these nicotine delivery devices. Already Canada and Australia have a complete ban on these PV devices. The FDA in the States is trying hard to do the same.

And while these PVs are not with out some risk, the delivery of nicotine is a far greater problem then the nicotine itself. At least with a PV you eliminate the thousands of carcinogens associated with analog cigarettes.

As an end note, I will suggest that the big Tobacco lobbies are are behind these bans due to potential loss in profit, not to mention the loss of revenue to governments in tax. The Korean government last year decided to add heavy taxes on PVs and peripherals, and thats why they are more expensive than other countries. I just hope that they don't try to ban them here in Korea. I love my PV!
