I really feel bad for you. Your anti-Christmas rant says a lot about how sad and empty your personal life must be. |
And your 'pro-Christmas' stance sows how superficial you are. If you do not care about people killing themselves then anything you say doesn't mean much.

Ha Ha thanks for the chuckle. Not according to my friends in those countries which celebrate this holiday. America just goes overboard because the government wants its people distracted from all the problems the country faces.

No, it puts the holiday in perspective. When I first came here, the big stores were all open, no music, no decorations and it was great. To not be bombarded with sales, and pitches, or pressure to buy, buy, buy one could actually enjoy the time of year and appreciate it. |

What are you talking about? It's already been posted on this thread that, "the suicide rate is, in fact, the lowest in December."
Yes, I'm sure the reason people put up lights, go around caroling, have parties, buy each other gifts etc., is because the government wants them to be distracted from all the country's problems. |

Putting up an Xmas tree can be a hassle. |
You forget, 9) all the fat heifers in the USA stuffing their faces on Turkey and Christmas Cake, something you've talked about on here ad nauseum. |
Yep, thanks for reminding me. It seems Americans gain more than a few pounds (or tons) after Christmas and New Year's. |

Christmas is way cooler here in Korea for a number of reasons.
1st off. You can do whatever the hell you want. Want to go to Thailand. Done
2nd. Have your own party and get deeerunk.
3rd. If you work for hagwons it is over and done with in one day. Xmas in
the states lasts for just too long. |

Christmas seems totally removed from the culture/religious aspects, and seems like another Pepporro (?) day here. When I see advertising here; it bothers me more than back home. But at least there isn't much of it. |

Yes, because endless K-pop all YEAR round is so much better.

Higher robbery: agreed. Depression and suicide? you prefer your suicides to be spread out but in larger amounts as in Korea?
5) The flooding of shopping malls with people.
Visit COEX on a weekend.

Christ that was funny...Christmas back home would be a relief after this stuff all year here.
I do like getting away from the commercialization of Christmas though. |

I don't like things about Christmas.
In particular, money. I hate spending money. Even when I had to resort to buying a card, I had to search long and hard for the cheapest ones. I probably spent more money having to fill my body up with energy from food after searching for so long. Lousy unsustaining body.
I don't like cards in general. Every year I insist to people I know will get me one, NOT to get me one. I despise the entire scenario: 'Here's a card, MERRY CHRISTMAS!'
'..thanks'
*opens*
It says 'MERRY CHRISTMAS!'
'Oh... thanks, you just said that to my face but whatever, as long as you could help towards killing a tree in the process, I'm happy'.
That and my Mum's side of the family (split since I was 3) isn't exactly very well off, so I hate that they go hungry for a month so they can provide gifts to people. At least if I say forget about me, she'll just give me like... a bottle of water and save money.
That and I hate having to think about what to get people. 99% of my life I've just... not gotten anything for anyone, but this year It's inevitable that I'll have to send stuff over, meaning I need to think of stuff for lots of people... urgh.
However, I like the reminiscent memories of curling up with my big dog by the fire with Moody blues or jean michelle jarre or various Christmas songs being played quietly.
However, I hated that, because it was all so long lasting, the end was horrible and I hated going back to reality.
Here, it's just one day where I'm sitting alone in my room, imagining everyone else to be having fun, and then I go to china 4 days later. Oh crap, I need to buy the tickets already.
Argh, crap, I'm gonna be late for work. |

At work back home, I'd give gifts to my favorite coworkers, and stick post-its on them that said:
Happy Holidays!
I hate cards.

The gifts could be store bought, something nice from a local bakery or farmers' market, or even homemade goodies. It was a nice way to say that I cared to those who made the workplace enjoyable. |

I LOVE Christmas, and was homesick my first Christmas in Korea.
When I went home, though, after six years in Korea, I actually ended up missing Christmas in Korea. It's much more relaxed, and there isn't so much pressure, like back home.
It's nice to be back for Christmas this year! |

Christmas is what you make of it. If you're a negative person, then you'll hate it because of **insert reasons here**. If you're positive, you'll enjoy the time off and hopefully build relationships with the important people around you. |

You don't like spending Xmas in the West because they don't have cheap prostitutes. Don't you go to the Philippines and Thailand every extended vacation you get to partake with the ladies of the night???
Isn't that the REAL reason you don't like Xmas in the West???

I can't believe that any thread about Christmas, even on a site as wretched as this, could devolve into people taking gianormous #$%s on each other.
Excuse me, I have to go give some money to some homeless people and restore someone's belief that the world can be kind. |

Seems like the thread is another excuse for the (gyopo) op to engage in yet more USA/American bashing. |

Reasons why Christmas is better in the West:
1. If Christmas is on a Saturday (like this year) you get Christmas Eve off too. In the case of the UK, you obviously get Boxing Day off too.
2. The week between Christmas and New Year's is dead quiet in the workplace. It also makes commuting a lot more pleasant.
3. Holiday parties. sure, some are awful, but they're almost all entertaining in one way or another.
I'm actually not a big Christmas person and used to disdain this time of year for the reasons people have provided on this thread. On the other hand, if one is single it is pretty easy to not get caught up in the BS part of the season. Consequently I'm now pretty neutral about Christmas. I imagine it would be much more difficult with having a fam. |
