How is Fukuoka for New Year's? I would like to know if it's worth going there for a few days for New Year's.

Would the museums for Hiroshima and Nagasaki be closed for on Dec. 30 and Jan. 1, 2?

Also, is Hiroshima/Nagasaki, Kyoto, Nara close enough to Fukuoka to take a bus?

I just want a short vacation withing dropping a ton of money (Tokyo).

Kyoto is a good 3 hours away on the bullet train. Nara is a further hour or so from there. If you are going to do that rail pass it.

Firstly, EVERYWHERE in Japan is expensive. Secondly, look at a map: Fukuoka to Nara by bus? When you only have a few days? Hiroshima or Nagasaki, yeah, that's doable. Thirdly, travelling in Japan during Shogatsu is never advisable. Many attractions are closed.

If you MUST go, stick to northern Kyushu. In Fukuoka, the Anchor Bar will likely be closed. Too bad, because that's a pub to go to.

I love that pub. There are some good drinking holes in Fukuoka...

I was in Fukuoka in 2007 and well, I don't regret going there but don't think I'll go again. It is nice and quiet but not much to do and hard to meet the natives. My friend told me donkatsu tastes much better in Japan so I tried it there, but it wasn't that different and more expensive.

Do I have to buy them online, or can I get them in person? And if so, where would I buy the pass?

You can buy at Hakata station ticket office or buy online and exchange it for the ticket at the station. Your choice. You need the passport.
For buses just buy them when you leave for Hiroshima. It's cheaper to buy return tickets.

If you're going to buy a J-rail pass, you can only buy it OUTSIDE Japan if you want the discount. Any JAL office & many Korean Travel Agents sell it. The Beetle return boat trip from Busan to Hakata was about 300,000 won return in 2007 (3 hours each way). Took about 2 or 3 hours on the bullet train from Hakata to Nagasaki. I really enjoyed my time there, & the A-Bomb museum is a must-see. Very thought provoking & sobering.
