I need to rush to Dongtan for an interview on Saturday (I'll start from the Jamsil station area). Honestly, what's the fastest way to Dongtan from Seoul? I'm reading different things.

Get up early and get on the #1 subway line to that area. BTW, did the school give you directions? They may be able to tell you the best way to travel there.

I recommend the M 4403 bus. I catch it from Gangnam. Go out from exit six and walk down till you get to Dunkin Donuts. The bus should stop close to there, not at the sign, but up a little.

It comes about every 5 minutes. Takes about 40 to get to Dongtan, about 30 coming back.

It will take you into central Dongtan. Metapolis area. Goes other places too, but I've never stayed on it long enough to find out where.

Much quicker than the subway, especially coming from Jamsil.

Well, I haven't actually taken it since that highway fire. Anyone know if that would affect this route much?

The highway fire would have zero affect.

From Jamsil, there are plenty of buses that go to Suwon Station or Kyeong-hee University in Suwon. Dongtan sits next to Yeongtong/Suwon, so if you go to KH uni, there are plenty of buses from there to the Byeongjeom/Taean/Dongtan area, or you could just cab it. If you go to Suwon station, there are buses from there to Dongtan, or you can go two stops south to Byeongjeom and then bus it from there.

From Gangnam, the 1550-1,2,3 (and the M bus mentioned earlier) all go to Dongtan, some more than others. 1550-1 hits the south end, -2 cruises down the main road, as does -3. It really does depend where in Dongtan you're going. The area has grown a TON in the past 3 years, and while it's still a small area, you could still waste some taxi money instead of taking a bus directly to where you want to go.

If you want to take the subway, the trip isn't TOO bad, about 75-80 minutes, so depending on the weather and time of day, you may be better on the subway.

I used to live near Dongtan. It doesn't have a subway (yet).

Anyway, bus is probably the best option but if you live near Seoul, Yongsan or Sindorim then you can take the Mugunghwa to Suwon station and a taxi from Suwon station to Dongtan will cost between 8-10,000. This would be much faster than the bus.

Dongtan is a great, self-contained little city. There isn't anything in Dongtan that is more than five years old. Very modern and kind of strange in how different it is from the rest of Korea.

But he's coming from Jamsil. DON'T take the train, you'll waste more time going to the station in Seoul than you would just taking trip via bus from Gangnam or Jamsil.

Oh, didn't see the Jamsil part.

Anyway, I never suggest the bus because it's so painfully slow. The trip could take him four hours.

That's why I recommended the M bus. It's pretty direct.

Though Rutledge seems to know much better than I. If there's a bus from Jamsil take that. Going from Kyunghee by taxi can get expensive too, and transferring buses would take forever. If you can go straight into Dongtan by bus I'd recommend that.

definitely not subway

Thanks all. You saved me. I think I'll take a taxi to the Gangnam area to catch a bus from there. It looks like the bus stop is at 교보타워사거리.강남역 if anyone else finds themselves in this same position.

Couldn't find the M 4403, but I did find the 1550 bus. It was out exit three. It took me about 40 minutes to get to the Dongtan Emart and a school official picked me up from there.

The taxi ride was a baaaaaaaaad idea. I don't live in Seoul so I learned my lesson for next time!
