What's the best way to do this, and to avoid customs taxes? Open the box and declare it used and a gift? Hide it in something else in the box and not declare it at all (my package will have several other things, like candy and clothing)?
I'm sure this has been asked before, but the search function isn't working. |

don't declare it. Customs takes off from the value of the whole package + the cost of shipping. They won't just take it from the ipod, alone. mix it in with old stuff, preferably other electronics beat to hell. You've got a 70-80% of getting it through |

My sister sent me one last year - a new iPod touch, worth about $500AUD. It wasn't disguised, but it got through fine, no tax. Winterfall's idea seems like a good one though. |

Do you remember how it was declared on the package? I seem to remember reading that you need to declare electronics as gifts and open them up. |

Why would you do this?
an ipod touch 4g, 8gb is only 299,000W here.
CAD for example they're $249.
with exchange that's 285,000W + shipping
+possible duty
the price difference is almost nothing.
a 64gb is 489,000W
in Canada with exchange 491,000W
unless you're getting a really great deal on them, like they fell off a truck, there is no reason to be importing ipods. Due to apple's pricing countries can't really undercut each other on them. it's why you don't see any massive price differences at wal-mart on them over other stores. |

I can't I'm sorry, but it didn't occur to me to tell her to do anything special, so I presume she just told the truth. It was still in its box. It probably just said "electronic goods" or something like that. I guess I got lucky. |

I have had stuff sent to me. Clothes, shoes, electronics.
For the clothes, they just rip off the price tag, the shoes didnt have a price tag and the camera + ipod, they just opened the box and mixed in some old tshirts
My parents use this guy in "Koreatown", and he write the address in Korean and declares it as old clothes or something. Haven't had a problem yet. |

My mom sent me one a few years ago. She took it out of the box and downloaded a few songs to it. Marked the package as used electronics. |

Where is the 64gb ipod touch 489,000? Apple.com and Apple store in Myeong-dong were 569,000. |

I agree with Crossmr. If you include taxes and international shipping alone, the price of most of the iPods (and some other non-Apple electronics too) arent AS terrible if you get them from the Apple store in Korea. Plus you dont have to deal with customs opening your package to be nosy or charging you an extra tax.
Your parents can use a foreign credit card online, and if not, they can call the Apple store in Korea (they have English speaking help for ordering things) and pay with a foreign credit card (at least that's what I've been told).
If you're looking to save money, you can get a refurbished 3rd Generation iPod Touch from the Korean Apple Store for 239,000W.
If you're American, right now is ideal as the Won is currently pretty weak. |

Isn't the duty free allowance like $400 USD? What iPod costs more than that? I think it will be fine. |
