that's not necessarily a good thing. That Castillian lisp is atrocious. (say veces!)
I'd recommend most males ignore it/lose it/ don't use it.
unless you're into that sort of thing.
Best spanish would be from an educated Colombian, or DF Mexican. (the peasant singing Mexican Spanish is the worst though)
butterflysita, unless you have spent some time living in a Spanish native environment, I'd have to question your near native pronounication claim, though it's possible you're more talented than most gringos/gringas. Hearing Spanish with a pronounced gringo/a accent is akin to nails on a chalkboard.
(e.g. most US diplomats, Georgie W with hick gringo accent etc)
if someone's an actual native speaker, or Hispanic American who spoke Spanish at home, I'd be more than interested in hanging out/practicing my Spanish with you (and I could keep up fairly well you wouldn't have to dumb down the conversation).
Latinas preferred.
Hot Latinas will enjoy affirmative action |
Vagabundo/Mariposa:
I guarantee that no native Spanish speaker thinks a Peninsular (Spanish) accent sounds gay or anything close to it. Trust me. They might think it's peculiar but there is absolutely no other stigma attached it besides something some people (usually Americans) attach to it.
There is no "good" or "bad" Spanish to learn. If one preoccupies himself/herself with such things, he/she will never learn Spanish well.
I don't think it's necessary to "localize" your Spanish. Learning slang perfectly from one country will help you get a feel for another country's slang. Everything is positive when it comes to learning.
Mariposa should post a sound clip and we can judge |
yes, I remember my Cubana professor at U of Havana tell me when I'd complain of the rapidity and swallowing of endings and other "cubanismos", that in the end.. Spanish is Spanish.
Once I became more comfortable in the language, I realized that ultimately, she was correct.
I also agree that the "lisp" ( once again, the word "vez", "veces" is perhaps the best example of it) is something that is more unappealing to North American ears, but to NA ears it is an unmistakeable lisp |

yes they do. They also use the vosotros pronoun which Latin Americans do not. Axing it eliminates another big set of conjugations that one would typically have to master.
all in all though, these are fairly trivial matters. Despite some differences in slang and expressions between various countries, much less Spain, (the use of the word coger being perhaps the most amusing) it really is amazing how you can effectively communicate with everyone around you on an entire continent, south of the Rio Grande River
(it'll even enable you to communicate on a basic level in portuguese speaking Brazil)
I'd dare say Spanish is easily the most practical language to know and learn worldwide after, if not on par, with English. |

That's probably true, especially considering how long it takes to learn it compared to a language like Chinese. Spanish is pretty unique compared to most other languages in how it lacks a single cultural and economic heavyweight. German has Germany, English has the US, Portuguese has Brazil, Chinese - China, French - France, and so on, but Spain is nowhere near the largest economy in the EU and Latin American countries are numerous but none of them is particularly dominant over any other. Mexico could be but it still struggles with some pretty basic problems and doesn't seem to be on the verge of solving them. On top of that having 40 million in the US but only being official in a single state is pretty phenomenal. Spanish has an extremely wide but somewhat shallow and fragmented base. I made two charts (nominal GDP) the other day to show this:
Spanish
Portuguese
Overall I'd say Mexican Spanish is the best to learn unless you're in Europe. They usually tend to be the easiest to understand and if you keep in mind how it extends into the US as well it's by far the most widely spoken. Here's a good example of really clear Mexican Spanish:

On Portuguese: since Portuguese speakers tend to understand more Spanish than the other way around you could also say that Portuguese is one of the most practical languages one could learn. Kind of how the majority of Netherlanders speak German too but it's almost never the other way around. Of course the best advice is just to learn the one you prefer since you have to stick with it for a few years anyway and personal interest is the best way to keep something up in the long term.
By the way, we put out an app yesterday on learning Portuguese through Spanish and I have promo codes so if anyone has an iPad/iPhone then let me know and I'll give you one.
Edit: personally I think I like EU Portuguese the best. Compare this:

It's not just this song either, I prefer the latter almost all the time.
Lyrics for the latter:
Quote: |
Quis Deus, eu no! Eu sou humano, no resisto tentao No deixes, Maria Que esta bruxa possa vir minha carne E sangue consumir
Destri Esmeralda
Que arda em chamas no inferno!
Seno que seja minha e s para mim
- Ministro Frollo. A cigana fugiu.
- O qu?
- No est na catedral, desapareceu.
- Mas como? No importa. Sai, idiota!
Eu a encontro, eu a encontro nem que tenha que queimar toda Paris!
 fogo do inferno
Tens, bruxa, que escolher
Ou eu ou o fogo
S minha ou vais arder!
Deus, tem piedade...
Piedade de ns...
Mas ou vai ser minha ou vai arder! |

I was up at the Kyobo bookstore in Gwangwhamun today. Not a great selection of Spanish books. I think I'll have a look on Amazon and order from there.

There is a Spanish-language group that meets up occasionally. For more information about it, search for the group on meetup.com. |

Learning portuguese was definitely much easier since I already knew spanish. Mexican spanish is most practical, though dirty-sounding, for me since I'm from California, but I like peruvian spanish. I heard colombian spanish is also very neutral and easy to understand, though I've never been so I couldn't tell. Argentinian spanish also sounds nice, but took a while to catch the y=sh/ch/z/j sound. |

Argentine Spanish is Brazilian portuguese influenced, hence the slightly different sounds. They also use the singular "vos", which has to be a spinoff on the portuguese "voce" for "you".
Educated Colombian Spanish (for e.g. from Bogota, is indeed one of the best forms of Spanish one can learn). Re Mexican Spanish, the Mex Spanish one hears in the US comes from barely literate peasant immigrants and has that "singing" sound to it.
but listen to educated Mexicans from DF and you'll hear something else entirely. on par with Colombia. |
