A 200k desktop with larger power supply and room for 6-8 HDDs.
It will work better, cost less, have more capacity, be expandable and upgradable, easy to add more capacity later as needed and be easy to secure.

It's the size really, can't have a desktop however large/small sitting around, ideally though for the future something like this will be bought, http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1126552
But for now, it'd be my first NAS (awww) so looking at a single/2 drive unit along the Netgear/WD/other brands, just looking at what people have really and what they find useful/reliable. |

IF you only need a single drive unit, why not just get a external USB HDD case, add a 1TB HDD (pick your favorite brand) and allow the drive to be shared on the network (which is what a NAS is anyway). The ONLY difference is that it connects through a USB port on your PC instead of the Network hub via a network cable.
Cost you less than 100k all-in, be just as good as a NAS and save you a ton of hassle if you don't have the room for a mini-desktop.
Oh, and the box you linked to is nothing more than a gutted out mini-tower/desktop (and just about the same size). Better and cheaper to just buy an entry level mini-desktop (about 200k won).

On a Side note,
My D-Link router has a USB port to share an External Hard drive over the network like a NAS.
I'd say the easiest and cheapest way would be to buy a router that supports External hard drives, and hook up a 1TB or larger drive to it. |

Awww ttompatz you're always so helpful I don't want to seem rude by pointing out the flaws in your advice, I'd like an actual NAS so it can work as actual Network Attached Storage, to backup 1 PC and 2 laptops here, as well as allow me to access files when travelling internationally and serve files to folks back home, and the torrents, small size, power saving time profile settings some give would be a real bonus. Just don't have experience with any to choose from, hence looking for what people might be using here as suggestions.
The HP box yes just is a small Desktop, but its ultra low power draw and size offer benefits over just any desktop PC. But not getting one of those anyway so a non issue really!
I've got a crappy IPtime router here, well it's not to bad, not mine to mess with though, no USB on it. |

I have a solution for you. It involves using any old PC.
http://freenas.org/FreeNAS
It is an open source operating system that turns any PC into a NAS device. If you are bold and adventerous this may suit your needs. I run it in my offrice and its very good. |

Hey,
@giant: I am also looking for a NAS these days. I found some relatively cheap NAS systems from Buffalo. They offer 1 bay and 2 bay solutions. Might be interesting for you. The new V series has a 1.6Ghz cpu and 256 RAM.

@all As I said I wanna buy or build a NAS. Here are my requirements:
-min. 2 bay or more
-Must be able to stream HD video to other devices (Not sure if the buffalo will be able to stream HD video...)
-WOL
I am not an computer expert. Which mainboard (maybe with onboard Cpu) can you recommend, if I am going to build my own system.
Price and links would be nice.
Maybe the experts can post a nice setup here.
Tank you! |

Thanks for that link. Those are a good alternative. I am just saying, if you got an old box lying around, you can use freenas to make a NAS. |

I still hope someone will post a nice NAS setup hear. |

I'm kinda sold on the Netgear solution, they have a really good wealth of knowledge/support on their own forums with lots of folks doing some handy home development work on them, I don't think Buffalo has this.
The netgear also looks to be a better spec with more usable USB slots for expansion, their Xraid function is handy to seeing as you can easily keep expansing it when you need too, that and the long warranty help.
Netgear UK are also giving away free HDDs to to upgrade the NAS to 2X1Tb spec too, don't think that offer is on in Korea though
Like Lars I don't have a spare rig to use. |
