I'm an American that grew up as a football, basketball, US sports fan but now see futbol as the world's most beautiful game. It's not just the scoring, contact, etc that is it important, its the buildup, chemistry, drama, spontaneity etc. that makes futbol special. There is a focus on team play, determination, and technique that leads to a continuous beautiful flow in the game.

American sports seem to have too many stop and starts, individual play, and just focus on scoring. And plus I would rather watch a sport celebrated around the world that anyone can play than watch a sport focused primarily in one country. And like others have said, why change an almost perfect game (although instant replay and getting rid of morons at FIFA would help). Thats just my opinion though.

Make the field larger.

Or, make the ball much smaller and flatter, play on ice with skates and a stick. Now THAT would be a sport worth watching. Fast, physical, with lots of passing and shooting and no less of a celebration when a goal is scored, yet with 7 goals a game average (4-3 or 5-2, etc) instead of a mere 1 or 2. Penalize diving of any kind to the point where almost nobody does it. Substitute players often and quickly, keeping them fresh instead of dogging it for stretches. What a game that would be.

Really? Ice hockey? That's a terrible sport.....you never know which players are on the ice because they rotate them so much, and trying to keep up with where the puck is is like watching a fly buzzing around the room...you catch it occasionally bit most of the time you are trying to locate it.

american (rules) football would be a lot more entertaining if they didnt stop the game every 2 minutes and didnt dress like actresses from 'Dallas/Dynasty/80's dramas' with helmets. I dont even get that much dressed up if Im on a race track let alone playing rugby.

It would also be fairer if the majority of the athletes wernt full of steroids.

I also think (as the opposite of european etc. rules football), that the game would be better if teams stayed in their home town allowing fans to support a team from their home and have a sense of local identity. How can you feel a true fan of a team that just ups and goes to another state?. In the Uk, usually if your from 'x' you would support 'x' - through thick and thin because its you home (town/city) team. Its just as important to support carlisle utd (or ackrington stanley) as it is to support newcastle utd - because its your home and wherever you go and wear your colours - you can show people where your from - and be proud (unless your a glory seeking man utd supporter).

I just dont get the moving around thing, or the pads for that matter.

hehe, yeah, I was going for a 'tit for tat' angle.

It was either that or pointing out the silliness of making a pole for changing the amount of players on a football field- next stop FIFA P.R. with the results!

Americans and Canadians have no business trying to improve soccer. Yeah it's boring as hell to most of us, but the rest of the world seems to like it (god knows why), so leave it alone.

I'm sure we don't want anyone changing football or baseball (Amerks) and we Canucks (and I suppose northern Americans who seem to get hockey) are definitely sick people trying to change hockey for the Americans that don't get it.

it makes it more booooooooring when 1 or 2 goals is scored..
after the 5th goal you think the players are gonna run like crazy and celebrate the goal??? it will be like basketball then, shoot score, slap your team makes hand and prepare for the next move.. no big deal..

The major problem I have with the low scoring nature of futbol is when (and this happens a lot from what I've observed) a team is rewarded a chip shot that takes a match/series/championship for a blatant dive or a questionable call. In a sport where 2-0 is considered a spanking, I just can't get over that.

It's an essential part of the game, but I think if they removed offsides and allowed for fast breaks the game would be 100X more palatable for American appetites. Of course, you'd need more subs because, despite the notion that "soccer players do it for 90 minutes" those guys spend an AWFUL amount of time standing around and/or lightly jogging. I think someone coined the term "total football" several years back to describe the North Koreans' approach of just insane conditioning and going full-bore the entire game. That would be fun to see.

I agree with you that matches should not be won on dives, which is why any player who is found to dive by a video replay should be given an automatic ten match suspension and large fine. This would solve the problem faster than any reduction in the number of players.

I definitely wouldn't take offsides out, all that would happen then is that a big man would stand in the opposition box and as soon as his team gets the ball they'd just hoof it straight up. This is why offside was introduced in the first place. Remove offside and you lose passing play.

Total football is a term which dates back to the 1970s, and was used to describe a Dutch style of play in which every player could play in several positions, meaning they could keep switching, covering each other, etc. There's also a word to describe modern Dutch football - "kickboxing".

To answer the OP's question, no the game does not need fewer players on each side. Passing and using tactics to break down the opposition is what the game is all about, and to change that would reduce the game to one in which the only real attribute you need is speed.

We don't need to change the game to suit Americans - as the game gets more widespread coverage over there, Americans will have more appreciation of the tactical side of football. Those who enjoy that aspect will follow the sport, those who don't enjoy it will follow other sports. Which is fair enough.
