My favorite class asked me what subjects I studied in school in Canada. I listed them off and one asked, surprised "teacher, you not studied Korean?".

I tried not to laugh out loud. Failed. But after thinking about it it made sense that children here studying english might think other kids in other places are studying Korean. You know that kind of childhood logic.
Still funny though.

I had a new student misread a sentence to "Could you please me Ms. Apple?" I was successful in not laughing aloud. I still can't remember the original sentence. I also like the occasional "Sh*t down" instead of sit down. One student spelled duck d-i-c-k. I told him how wrong he was. I could only imagine what they think of our alphabet, A B C (in Korean, to pee)... L, M, N, O, P (blood, in Korean).

Not a student, but a friend.

In a text message...

'What do you want to do with me'?

In person, after she spilled some beer.

'I'm wet.'

Hahah it rules.

two things:

one kid... in a really lower level class; we were going through body parts with flash cards. he knew hand, foot, arm, etc. but when we got to a picture of the foot he said "uhh, foot?" but there was an arrow pointing to the toe specifically.

"uhh... uhhh... AH! FOOTFINGER!!!"

because he was big fat kid and he said it with such emotion i started laughing uncontrollably, like falling off my chair. so the kids followed me around the class for about ten minutes, saying "FOOTFINGER! FOOTFINGER! FOOTFINGER" like they were headhunters or something.

just the other night, some real prodigy 10 year old who is apparently being bred for harvard was in a discussion group with me. the discussion topic was world war 2.

we established the fact that yes, hitler was a bad guy, and even though some bad guys like sauron and lex luthor are kinda cool, he was a REAL bad guy who did real bad things to people.

then his classmate asked specifically about nazi torture methods, josef mengele and such (like i said, it was an advanced class, but young kids... sophomoric). i said "if you want to know about that stuff, get a book, we're not talking about it here".

the conversation paused, and the prodigy kid said,

"well, if I were hitler, i'd just make them chew on the tinfoil".

Funniest thing in writing: I had students "pretend" that they were famous people. They had to write the name on a piece of paper. One guy wrote
"Bread Feet". I KNEW that I'd been in Korea too long when I IMMEDIATELY knew that he meant "Brad Pitt!"

I had this conversation today with a class of sixth graders:

Student: "Teacher, why are your eyes brown?"
Me: "Because my parents eyes are brown."
Student: "But Daniel teacher is from Canada too and his eyes are blue."
Me: "Yes."
Student: (in awestruck voice) "You mean in Canada people can have blue eyes or brown eyes?"

Had a group of elementary kids telling about their parents' jobs yesterday. One little girl's father happens to be an executive in a major corporation, so her mom has no need to work.

Now, the other kids who have "non-working" mothers said something along the lines of "My mother stays home" or "My mother doesn't have a job." But this little girl wanted something more fitting of her mother's station in life. So she whipped out her electric dictionary and a few seconds later proudly announced, "Teacher, teacher, my mother is a mistress." Shocked

Well, you know how sometimes they mix up the letter 'd' and the letter 'b' when they are writing?

Here's the homwork question:

What did you do yesterday?

Answer: I rode my dike.

I've heard a few of these as well...

"Do people in Canada have yellow hair too?"

My "KO" or Me "KO" (thing?) is a common one.

And I also heard "foot finger" before when they obviously didn't know the word "toe"... funny ones.

Recently I've heard a few good ones.

"Teacher, what's your TOEFL" score?"

"How come foreigners understand English so much better than Koreans?" (the kids said this or something very close to this in Korean actually... but I still started laughing... I don't think they knew why I was laughing...)

"You understand that? (listening to an English conversation on tape... not easy for the students) Are you a genius?"

Actually have gotten the "Are you a genius?" a few times ... like because I read an English newspaper! Very Happy

Funny kids! Actually some of them are in middle school... still saying these funny things.

My school is above a kalbi restaurant.
