CARACAS, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Venezuela's parliament gave President Hugo Chavez decree powers for 18 months on Friday, outraging opposition parties that accused him of turning South America's biggest oil producer into a dictatorship.

The move consolidated the firebrand socialist leader's hold on power after nearly 12 years in office, and raised the prospect of a fresh wave of nationalizations as the former paratrooper seeks to entrench his self-styled "revolution."

Chavez had asked for the fast-track powers for one year, saying he needed them to deal with a national emergency caused by floods that drove nearly 140,000 people from their homes.

But the Assembly, which is dominated by loyalists from his Socialist Party, decided to extend them for a year and a half.

He's going to drive the country into the ground.

I had dinner with some Venezuelans the other night. Upper class Europeans. They're extremely hostile to Chavez. Through their words I could see why HC has so much pull with the lower classes. The economic elite is entirely indifferent to what happens to the bottom 95%. They are contemptuous of the peasants. No concern with building wealth among the people. The sole concern was maintaining the inherited wealth they had. One guy was applying for political asylum, of all things.

Chavez has done a lot good helping the lower classes. Good analysis of the Venenzuelan upper class Mise.

But at the end of the day Hugo is just another dictator. Yes he will drive the economy into the ground. So much wealth has already fled.

Hopefully he will be gone soon. His good deeds are canceled out by his lust for power and the oppressive means he has used to gain that power.

I think we all know where this is going, don't we? Another mugabe. Rolling Eyes Dictators tend to have zero knowledge about how the economy works.

He'll probably get it. My former next door neighbor applied for it and was received it back in October I believe. I have no idea how she did it. She's about as middle class as one can be in Venezuela. Had a job with the state oil company before quiting to get her Master's in the States (on a scholarship). After graduating she moved to Miami and now is really putting that degree to work by being a waitress and sales clerk at some store.
