I'm going to immigration to find out tomorrow if i need one but in the meantime...
Has anyone from the UK or Ireland had to get a new criminal record check to renew their visa, even though immi already had one on file?
This is the one sticking point for me as I'm not sure how quickly I could get this done. I'm re-signing in late February. Apostilling my degree should be a piece of cake. |

Depends if your previous check was local. If it was, then you will need to show a national check (disclosure) to renew. |

In ireland (and in the U.K, AFAIK) we don't have local checks. Our background checks are conducted by the gardai / Police and they control the entire country, not a state like in bigger countries.
Our school was told by local immigration that getting a new background check is needed if your extension occurs after january 1st. The plus side of getting these from Ireland is that you can have it in less than a week, the only annoying part would be getting someone to travel to the dept of foreign affairs for you to get it stamped. (I have heard that you can do it by post if you include a S.A.E and the cost and also motifying them beforehand).
It only takes about 15 mins in the dept of foreign affairs so if you can get someone close by to do it for you then they won't have too much hassle.
Also, from what I understand. Once you hand in this CBC and you don't leave Korea for more than a certain length of time (maybe 3 months, I don't remember) then you don't need to re-apply for the background check from your home country upon renewing / extending etc. |

It took about 6 weeks for mine to come through and I couldn't have it sent to myself. Only hiring companies can request them i.e. my recruiter.
How did you get yours? It sounds a lot easier. |

Went there today and Daejeon immigration said they are giving everyone a pass this year and we need all this done for next year. I'm not sure if this an official line or lot. I'm going to get my degree apostilled and my criminal record check done as well just in case. might not have time to have the check done.
What I want to know now...do I get my original degree apostilled or a copy? |

If you got yours in Ireland then you got the one from Thurles that says you are safe to work with kids. This is not the one that is needed. In fact the one from Thurles (which you have to pay for) can be given to people with criminal convictions as long as you are not deemed a threat to children. I know this because friends and family have received them to show they can volunteer for various sports clubs in town or to be a teacher in Ireland.
To get the one needed for Korea, you just go to the local gardai station (or your county one) and ask for the superintendent. Tell him you need a letter signed by him stating that you have no criminal convictions etc and that you've never been in trouble before.
I got mine within a week, this time last year and that included being posted out to my house, over the christmas period, with the dodgy icey roads and stuff.
I didn't get speaking to the superintendent so I just typed out a letter telling him I needed it to obtain a visa to work in Korea. I gave my name, pps number, passport number and my address.
If you tell the gardai you need it to get a teaching job in Korea, they automatically think you need the one to say you can work with kids (as they stop listening after you say teaching). You can't apply for this (as you said) you need an employer / recruitr to do it for you but it's not the one you need anyway. |

Are you British or Irish? If you are British then you are looking at the wrong check. There are three disclosure checks in the UK: Basic, Standard, and Enhanced. You can personally request a Basic Disclosure by going to their website - http://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/apply-online/ The Standard and Enhanced checks can only be requested, as you identified, by employers. I'm led to believe that either of these second two are okay for immigration. If you're Irish then ignore all that because I have no idea what the process is for there.
ETA: You need a Basic Disclosure if you are British.

I recently went through the visa application process. All I needed was an original notarised/apostilled BASIC disclosure CRC. You don't need to get the Standard or Enhanced CRC as far as I know. |
