I'm going to Thailand for near two weeks in February and I was wondering if I can wing the accommodation etc. without booking. I want to do a PADI course so I'm thinking about Koh Tao for that but otherwise I have no real plans.

What do you suggest, if you have been there before? Should I plan the whole thing or is it realistic/practical/enjoyable to play it by ear?

"peak" season ends about the second week of Jan. You should be fine to wing it in Feb.

I spent last March there and the only place that I booked ahead was the guesthouse that I stayed in on my first night. The only time I'd recommend booking ahead is if you're planning on hitting up any of the full moon parties. Otherwise, no problem at all. Enjoy!

Excet in extreme busy periods, nowhere in Thailand is totally booked up. But you may not be able to get a certain hotel/hostel/inn.

I always book the first day or 2 and then switch/extend.

This is what I do as well. With the number of places that there are to stay in any tourist destination in Southeast Asia, you want to get a feel for the place before committing for the whole time.

I am glad to read veteran travelers agreeing with me. It gives me confidence that I knwo what I'm doing.

If you're looking to get Scuba certified on Koh Tao I would highly recommend Ban's Diving Resort in Sairee Beach. The 4-day PADI open water certification is only about $300us (9,800 thb) and that includes your room. It would be in your best interest to call and confirm availability at least a few days in advance (even more if your trip coincides with a full moon party).

The staff was friendly, the equipment and facilities were great, the rooms were clean and their restaurant was delicious.

Yea, nice try Ban. Nah, just kidding You're not the first person to recommend them. Have looked at the website and it all looks good. I couldn't see where you found that price though.

The price is listed on their open water diver page:
http://www.bansdivingresort.com/diving/open-water-diver.html

If you have the time, I would highly recommend getting your Advanced Diving certification while you are there. I believe it's only an extra $100 usd and you'll get 4 more dives; navigation, night and 2 electives such as photography, fish identification or even diver propulsion device (dvp).

Thanks for the compliment on the website. It's actually my first site, but it took awhile to put it all together. Definitely helps fill all the spare time I have as a public school teacher.

Have a safe trip!
