|
|
Gonna buy new 60D body only.
Danawa vs Namdaemun vs Yongsan vs ?
Where am I likely to get the best price?
I know I could do the research myself but just don't have the time as I'm taking vacation on Friday.
Any pointers? |

Having shopped all three extensively for my Nikon D90 I recommend Yongsan. The mall at the station seems to have rather high prices: that is because they will give you a rather silly expensive initial price. You have to negotiate.
When I was looking for a D90 body the best quotes I got from Danawa were in the 900k range, from Namdaemun were 820k and From yongsan I was getting much of the same: 820k. That is until I found someone willing to sell for 780k. That was for a new, non-grey market, body.
Keep in mind this was months ago: prices have changed. Regardless, I would recommend Yongsan for a body if you are willing to negotiate. Another example of the pricing in Yongsan: I was looking for a tripod and was quoted 120k initially. I talked the man down to 65k. That is just how insane the overpricing is.
Another thing to keep in mind about Danawa is that some of the prices are attention getters only: they won't honor them necessarily unless you have a print out of the site. Also some places will offer a discount over the web price if you buy in store.
Finally there is another place to check out if you are into photography: Chungmuro, on line 3 near Jongo 3. The place is loaded with camera shops full of accessories and lenses. There are a lot of second hand shops and it is a good place to go if use film. At the subway take exit 5, walk straight out of the exit and take a right after the construction site. Then walk straight down, looking on your left side. There are probably 10 or so camera shops scattered about. Not a great place for bodies though I didn't check prices there when I bought my body. |

Awesome! Many thanks for the detailed post.
Yongsan is where I will be, trawling through the "HIWANTACAMERA" and "WHEREYOUFROM" to find that elusive best price.
Cheers! |

The best deals generally come from namdaemun though. I've bought cameras in Yongsan, Namdaemun, and Chungmuro.
Hcamera and Namyoung are foreigner friendly and most of the shops have someone who speaks english.
First make sure you know the general prices of new and used of the items you want via danawa or gmarket. Then I'd use hcamera as kind of the "baseline" to see the prices of the rest of the shops. Hcamera isn't always the cheapest but they're usually not the highest and they tend to be fairly straightforward for Namdaemun.
And if you build a relationship with them, they tend to be a lot more flexible in terms of gear, trades, etc. |

If you are going to H-Camera in Namdaemun, ask for Paul, their English speaker. He is knowledgeable about Canon (I believe he runs a 5D mark II as his personal kit) and his English is excellent. They are good people and do their upmost to try and help you. You can bargain a little there too, but don't push it. As the previous poster said, they are not the cheapest or the most expensive, but they are honest, about what you are getting (i.e, they don't try to pass of grey market imports as Korean etc). Their used stuff is also very clean and it usually has had a mini service before sale. At the end of the day, if the camera is an amazing deal, there is probably a reason for that, as Canon Korea (LG) has a fixed pricing list similar to the one that Apple uses, so if it is a Korean body, they don't have that much ley way to move on price. Be aware that if you buy a non Korean (grey market) body, then the world wide warranties are not valid in Korea and if you have a problem, it will cost you a lot of money to fix, even if the camera is only a couple of months old. The Korean versions should be in the range of 10-15% more expensive than the grey market versions. |

Paul no longer works at HCamera. He's out of the Namdaemun camera work. |
