Greetings All,
Just wandered if there were any other teachers over the ripe old age of 40 setting sail to SK in February?

I imagine the average age of NETs out there is about 25ish (?) but how many over 40s have you come across during your time there? |

I know three or four NETs in their late 30s or older, they are most definitely out there. You may also find yourself socializing with university profs and such, as many of them tend to be in that age range. |

That's so reassuring! Not that I have anything against under 40's you understand... I use to be one myself!
Thanks.

I'd put the average somewhere around 27. There are a lot of over 30 people here. |

Been here two years and I am 30. I tend to see a real mix in ages but yeah 27 as an average sounds about right. |

How's the hiring? I'm seeing some of the new 2010 hire-ees being in their early to mid 20's. Whereas, up until 2 years ago, I was seeing many 40's and 50's. I was in a rural/semi rural area. But even those areas have younger teachers now. So wondered if EPIK is discriminating or if the influx applying is younger teachers which is why this is what we're seeing. The only thing I see different might be non North Americans or not many of them, but still younger and mostly white. (Rural/semi rural area.) Maybe the real isolated rural (very tiny gun's) might have older people or a mix. Seems some of the older I've met came here before the surge and kept staying.
Not sure about any of this. Appearances or imagination? I was hearing a lot of doom and gloom on this board a year ago about older teachers being dismissed and replaced with younger teachers, but I'm not reading as many complaints nowadays. Not sure if this because things have changed or many older ones complaining are gone and replaced by younger ones that won't complain. Not sure.
On the positive side, the US economy is showing early signs of a recovery. Consumer spending is up for the first time in a couple of years and many investors seem to like Obama's extention of all the Bush tax cuts. If this is the case and the economy rebounds by 2012, will definately change things here again.
Also, what about the Korean hate blogs? I was hearing a lot about those a year ago. But now not so much. Either it has stopped or has it gone further underground?
Not rants; just curiousities, I guess. As for younger teachers, many are ok, so nothing against them. I'm not that old. 30's. An older teacher to me is 50's. |

I've got a friend 54. Epik denied the application. Saying they were full in the beginning of hiring season. So there definitely were spots. The recruiter let it slip, Epik doesn't hire people over 50. You can try for the smaller education programs. The more rural it is, the more desperate they are. All the 20 somethings want to be close to seoul.
You can try Jeollonamdo Education Office. They've got their own program & are also supported by EPIK. I think their acronym is JTL. Other programs you can look at is TALK but they pay less |

I'm EPIK, 'old', rural, and I'm leaving (after 4 distinct contracts in 4 different areas).
I've seen a marked drop in teachers' ages in the last 2 years. I was recently in the nearby city (1 hour 20 mins by bus and train from my school) and I was really surprised at the young age of the westerners on the busy city streets (xmas shopping time).
I used to see heaps of older, fatter - let's face it, uglier - westerners in the city, but now they all look like good-looking college grads.
It's definitely time to move on when everyone in your job is 1/2 your age.
Good luck young uns. |

Is it simply an age issue? I mean if there's a fit attractive, semi-younghish looking 50 year old, would they get rejected too. I don't mean that some 50 year olds I see look that bad, just normal. greyish hair, bald, small belly. (which to Koreans might be bad.) |

Yes, I've seen that change. I'm not that old yet. But feeling it compared to the early mid 20's age range. Guess, I'm just waiting a year for many of these to clear out and go back home. Seems an economic turnaround is starting. Yee haw! |
