Steve Landesberg, best known to television audiences as Det. Sgt. Arthur Dietrich on the '70s sitcom "Barney Miller," died today following a long battle with cancer. He was 65 years old.

He was good on Barney Miller, though it would be hard for me to express an opinion on how good an actor he was overall, since the Dietrich character was never really allowed a lot of emotional range. He did deadpan quite adeptly.

I saw him in the comedy film Wild Hogs a few years back. He had a role that couldn't have lasted for more than a minute, and was of little import to the overall story. I guess it was kind of depressing to see a guy who was a household face in the 70s and 80s reduced to taking extra bits in Grade B comedies, but such is the fate of many actors.

BARNEY MILLER was a well-written show & the actors were all well cast. Of course, to young 'uns raised on TWO & A HALF MEN, MILLER is pretty tame stuff.

My favourite was Det. Fish(I'm becoming more like him everyday Shocked) as played by Abe Vigoda. Vigoda is still alive! Double Shocked

Vigoda's been looking like he's at death's door since at least as far back as The Godfather in 1971. But even in that movie, he was only in his late forties/early 50s.
