I had to request my authentication via fax after I sent my original fingerprints to the FBI. I just got it back (took about 8 weeks for those who are curious) and it was a normal piece of paper but in the lower left corner it had a sort of seal in it from the DoJ, it was imprinted into the paper. I'm having a hard time coming up with a comparison but it was depressed into it.

Anyway, does this mean its been authenticated?

Also, I already have my visa and because I got it before the end of the year do i really need my FBI check?

Yes, your document sounds authenticated. The seal isn't so much of a stamp as it is an...impression? And there should be a signature (in ink) as well.

Impression! That's the word I was looking for!

Yeah, that's what it has and yes, there is also a signature.

Thanks, this is good news Smile

If the FBI check is signed and sealed by Kimberly, it means it can be apostille, but not apostille yet. You should know if you have an apostille on it cause it say apostille.

Here is a sample of the FBI Background Check:
http://apostillecentral.com/press/2010/10/12/fbi-background-check-sample/

If your document look like that it still need to be apostille. The word "Authentication" is used for countries that are not party to the hague convention such as United Arab Emirates.

South Korea would be an apostille country.

FBI background check takes 6-12 weeks.
Apostille from DOS takes 3-4 weeks by mail (it can be rush by apostille service, 3-5 days, if you need it in a rush).

Millyfriend, my background check looks like the one in the sample. Don't I need to get it notarized before I can get it apostilled?

So not fair!!! I FINALLY got my FBI CBC today after waiting since October...I asked them to authenticate it for an apostille, and they DID NOT do it according to this. All I have is a tiny FBI seal printed into the top left hand corner and that Kimberly person just typed their name...no signature at all. So now, since I am in Korea, I will have to go and pay the embassy $50 to notarize, and THEN send it to the DOS with $8...that's really nice...thank goodness my visa expires at the end of February...plus I was going to go to the embassy anyways to give them $50 to notarize my degree...total pain=$100 Crying or Very sad

You're welcome. I take no credit, though. Dave Harvey did it.

Same for me. Why am I always so amazed by incompetence? I should be used to seeing it by now.

EDIT: Okay, I'm being told by Footprints that I can get the CBC notarized locally and then send it back to the F.B.I. for authentication and that this will take 2 weeks. Has anyone else heard of this?

EDIT 2: According to the FBI faq, "Requests to authenticate previously processed results will not be accepted."

I just knew this would happen to others, too. If you are in Korea, go to the US embassy and have them notarize an affadavit, then mail it to the DOS in Washington, DC...don't send it back to the FBI.

What are my options if I'm still in the States? Can I just have it notarized locally and then send it to the DOS, or do I need to send it back to the FBI if I'm local?

Despite my CBC not being authenticated the State Department still apostilled it. Lucky me.
